This is the story of Amsa — a resilient woman living in a small town called Siruvanur in Tamil Nadu, India. Life has not been easy for her. After her sister passed away, Amsa married her sister's husband in hopes of being able to provide a better life for her son and his family. However, their marriage faced many challenges, and at the age of 35, Amsa made the brave decision to leave her husband due to difference of opinion. She now cares for her only son, but her health limits her ability to work. Even a short time in the sun leaves her with chest pain and dizziness, making it difficult to earn enough to support her family.
Amsa set up a small shop at a bus stop in Siruvanur, selling whatever she could. Despite her efforts, the earnings were insufficient to meet her family’s needs. In desperation, she turned to the Voice Trust, a local nonprofit organization known for helping those in need. The organization encouraged Amsa to start her own business, selling foods that were in high demand during certain seasons. Following their advice, she began producing homemade sago/rice fritters (vadagam and vathal), purified tamarind (puli), and rice cake (idli) batter, changing her goods according to buyer needs.
Amsa’s work involves buying rice and vegetables at low cost and using the sun to dry them into products she can sell later when prices rise. Her hard work and dedication to help her family have allowed her to build a modest income. However, the physical demands of the work are challenging, especially when it comes to extracting its purified parts of tamarind, a task that requires additional manpower. With her son unable to help due to a recent leg injury, Amsa has had to hire workers, further stretching her limited resources. Yet, she remains determined to support her son’s family with the income she earns.
Voice Trust has been a lifeline for Amsa, offering not just guidance but also supporting her in selling her goods. This assistance has been so important in helping her sustain her business and provide for her family. The organization’s commitment to helping people like Amsa shows their true passion to lift up those who are struggling, giving them the opportunities they need to transform their lives. Through their continued support, Amsa has been able to rise above her problems and find a way to make a sustainable living, despite the many obstacles she has faced.
Amsa’s story is one of many examples showing the power of community and the difference that organizations like Voice Trust can make in the lives of those who need it most. Her journey shows resilience and hope and is an example of how even the smallest act of kindness and support can lead to profound change. As Voice Trust continues to aid individuals like Amsa, they depend on the generosity of donors to ensure that their work can reach even more people in need. By supporting Voice Trust, you are not just helping one person—you are contributing to a movement that is changing lives and creating a brighter future for countless families across India.
