Summary

Ocean Blue will reach 17,000 students in 750 classrooms in the U.S., Canada, and the U.K. through interactive live lessons centered around the state of our One World Ocean. The Blue Schools program educates youth of all ages about the link between the Ocean and Climate Change, the challenges of ocean plastics, and impacts of marine debris on marine wildlife, while inspiring kids to be stewards of our local and marine water resources.

Challenge

Every single stream, river and ocean is part of a single global ecosystem: One World Ocean. This ecosystem is at increasing risk from human activity. According to NOAA, 79% of all beach debris is made of plastic. Once in the water, plastic never fully biodegrades, but breaks down into smaller and smaller pieces, eventually becoming microplastics that cause harm to marine life and disrupt global oxygen production. The total weight of plastics in the ocean could exceed that of fish by 2050.

Solution

Our Blue Schools program brings STEM experiences to the K-12 classroom through experiential ecology and technology. Students of all backgrounds and locations can go to the beach, learn about marine debris and the ocean plastic crisis, their local watershed, and become stewardship leaders in their own communities. By educating and inspiring future generations to be stewards of our precious water resources, our one World Ocean will have a chance to recover from the current plastic crisis it faces.

Long-Term Impact

By supporting efforts to promote stewardship of our waterways that all flow to our one world Ocean, you'll help to enhance water quality, livability, economic value, and health of our communities. Blue Schools will encourage 17,000 future stewards to care about our watersheds and our Ocean, and when we care then we will collectively take steps to heal the Ocean. Empowerment of future stewardship can fully mitigate all contributors to climate change, including plastic oceans.
