Safe Space and Emergency Support Report - GBV Prog

By Dancan Okaka | Director

1. Introduction

The Safe Space and Emergency Support initiative under Saidika Organization’s GBV program in Kibera is dedicated to providing immediate protection, care, and essential services to survivors of gender-based violence. The program focuses on offering temporary shelter, medical assistance, counseling, legal aid, and other critical support services that help survivors regain safety and stability.

2. Program Objectives

Immediate Protection: To offer safe, confidential spaces for survivors in immediate danger.

Comprehensive Support: To provide holistic support including medical care, psychological counseling, and legal assistance.

Empowerment and Reintegration: To equip survivors with the resources needed for long-term recovery and reintegration into their communities.

3. Achievements During the Reporting Period

a) Safe Spaces Established

Safe spaces have been strategically set up across Kibera to ensure accessible protection for survivors.

These safe spaces also serve as resource centers where survivors can receive counseling and information on available support services.

b) Emergency Rescue and Shelter Support

During the last program cycle, 15 survivors received immediate support through our emergency rescue and shelter services.

Coordination with local law enforcement and community leaders ensured that these survivors were swiftly relocated to secure safe houses, protecting them from further harm

c) Medical and Psychological Assistance

All 15 survivors were provided with emergency medical care, including first aid and post-rape care services as needed.

Psychosocial support was offered, with individual counseling sessions initiated for each survivor to address trauma and aid in emotional recovery.

d) Legal Assistance and Advocacy

Legal support was extended to all survivors, assisting them in filing police reports and obtaining protection orders.

Legal awareness sessions were held to inform survivors of their rights and the available legal avenues for justice.

e) Provision of Essential Items and Support Services

Dignity kits, including sanitary products, clothing, and personal care items, were distributed to all 15 survivors.

Additional support, such as food assistance and referrals to economic empowerment programs, was provided to help survivors stabilize their living conditions.

4. Challenges Faced

Limited Shelter Facilities: Although we supported 15 survivors this period, the demand for safe housing continues to exceed available capacity.

Security Risks: Ensuring continued safety post-intervention remains challenging due to potential threats from perpetrators.

Funding Constraints: Limited resources impact the scale at which safe spaces and comprehensive support services can be expanded.

Community Stigma: Survivors often hesitate to come forward due to cultural stigma and fear of retaliation, affecting the overall reach of the program

5. Recommendations and Next Steps

Expand Shelter Capacity: Seek additional funding to secure more locations and enhance existing safe space facilities.

Strengthen Partnerships: Collaborate with governmental bodies, local NGOs, and community leaders to boost emergency response capabilities.

Enhance Community Outreach: Increase awareness programs to reduce stigma and encourage more survivors to seek help.

Increase Legal Support: Work with more legal professionals to provide faster and more comprehensive legal aid to survivors.

Integrate Economic Empowerment Programs: Introduce targeted skill-building and financial assistance initiatives to support long-term recovery for survivors.

6. Conclusion

The Safe Space and Emergency Support program has made a significant impact in protecting and aiding GBV survivors in Kibera. In the last program cycle, we successfully supported 15 survivors by providing them with immediate shelter, medical care, psychological counseling, and legal assistance. Despite the progress, challenges remain that require ongoing efforts and additional resources. Saidika Organization remains committed to scaling these services to reach more survivors and to continually improve the support systemf or GBV survivors in the community.
