Progress Report – October 2025
Implementing Partner: Saidika Organization
Project ID: 63569
1. Executive Summary
This progress report highlights the achievements and lessons from Saidika Organization’s initiative “Empower 200 Youth Entrepreneurs in Kisumu & Busia.” Between April and October 2025, we continued to advance youth empowerment through an integrated approach combining climate action and entrepreneurship training.
Through a strategic partnership with DOTS, Saidika Organization reached 130 youth across Nairobi and Kisumu counties. The program has equipped participants with practical knowledge and hands-on experience in green entrepreneurship, promoting local innovation and sustainability.
2. Project Background
Youth unemployment and climate vulnerability remain critical challenges in Western Kenya. This project seeks to equip 200 young people with entrepreneurial skills that enable them to generate income while addressing environmental issues in their communities. By integrating climate action into business training, the program empowers youth to create climate-resilient enterprises and promote sustainable development.
3. Key Achievements (April – October 2025)
a. Training and Capacity Building:
Reached 130 youth (65% women, 35% men) through climate and entrepreneurship sessions.
Facilitated workshops on green business models, sustainable agribusiness, and renewable energy innovation.
Partnered with local mentors and business experts to provide follow-up coaching and mentorship.
b. Enterprise Development:
Supported the launch of 10 youth-led start-ups addressing local challenges such as waste recycling, climate-smart farming, and eco-friendly product design.
Linked participants to local business networks and microfinance partners for continued growth.
c. Community Impact:
Conducted three environmental action drives including tree planting and community clean-ups.
Reached over 200 indirect beneficiaries through awareness campaigns and youth-led initiatives.
4. Human Impact Story
One notable success story is Odijo , a 22-year-old participant from Busia County. Prior to joining the program, Odijo faced limited economic opportunities. Through the Saidika-DOTS training, she developed a business model focused on recycling plastic waste into eco-bricks for construction. Today, her enterprise employs three other youths and contributes to cleaner neighborhoods while generating sustainable income.
Faith’s story illustrates the program’s impact—transforming knowledge into sustainable action and inspiring other young people to become agents of change.
5. Challenges and Lessons Learned
Limited Access to Resources: Some participants lacked access to digital devices and stable internet for online learning components. This was mitigated through partnerships with local youth hubs and use of community centers.
Startup Financing Gaps: Many promising ideas required seed capital to scale. The project addressed this by linking participants with microfinance institutions and exploring grant opportunities.
Lesson: Collaboration remains central to overcoming systemic barriers. Partnerships between NGOs, local government, and the private sector significantly enhance sustainability and reach.
6. Next Steps (November 2025 – April 2026)
As we work toward reaching the full target of 200 empowered youth, the next phase will focus on:
Scaling the climate entrepreneurship model to train the remaining 70 participants.
Establishing a Youth Green Innovation Hub in Kisumu to provide continuous incubation and mentorship.
Strengthening partnerships for market access and seed funding for youth-led enterprises.
Integrating digital literacy and climate technology innovation into future training sessions.
7. Conclusion
The Empower 200 Youth Entrepreneurs in Kisumu & Busia project continues to demonstrate how youth empowerment can serve as a catalyst for climate resilience and sustainable development. Through capacity building, mentorship, and innovation, the project has nurtured a growing network of young entrepreneurs driving change in their communities.
Saidika Organization remains committed to fostering inclusive growth, promoting environmental stewardship, and creating pathways for youth-led solutions in Kenya and beyond.
