Creating Pathways to Inclusive Employment for Persons with Disabilities

Since its inception, the Deaf Welfare Awareness Foundation (DWAF) has been working to create a society where Deaf and Persons with Disabilities are recognized as equal and active members of the workforce and community.

As part of this project, DWAF is organizing awareness and engagement sessions with employers and institutions across both the public and private sectors. These efforts cover a wide range of fields, including services, manufacturing, restaurants, textiles, electronics, healthcare and hospitals, as well as government departments and public institutions.

DWAF has also engaged with organizations and stakeholders including Punjab Police, CTO offices, educational institutions such as UMT, UCP, Beaconhouse and LUMS, NGOs, WCCI, and the Punjab Women Development Department, among others. Through these interactions, we share practical guidance on workplace inclusion, accessibility, communication barriers, and the importance of providing equal employment opportunities to Deaf and other Persons with Disabilities.

Our goal is not only to create awareness but to encourage employers and institutions to take practical steps toward inclusion—ensuring that Deaf, hearing, visual, and physically disabled individuals can participate meaningfully across different sectors of society.

DWAF is also advocating for disability awareness to become part of the mainstream school curriculum. We have shared suggestions with the Special Education Department to introduce a basic disability awareness chapter for children without disabilities. Early awareness can help develop understanding, acceptance, empathy, and positive attitudes from a young age.

Through this continued engagement, DWAF is working to shift the conversation from disability as a limitation to ability, participation, dignity, and equal opportunity. We believe that when employers, educational institutions, government departments, and communities work together, inclusive workplaces can become a reality.
