Human Rights First Rwanda Association (HRFRA), in collaboration with community-based partners, organized a series of tsnsitization meetigs to empower women and girls living with HIV/AIDS. The initiative reached 100 participants across selected Village level sectors in Kaamonyi District, focusing on equipping them with knowledge and practical strategies to challenge stigma and discrimination in healthcare, justice, and community settings.
Objective
The main goal was to build the capacity of women and girls living with HIV/AIDS to recognize, resist, and respond to stigma and discrimination that limit their access to essential services and equal participation in society.
Activities Conducted
Awareness Sessions: Facilitators led interactive discussions on understanding stigma and its effects on health-seeking behavior, justice, and social relations.
Rights-Based Training: Participants were sensitized on their rights under Rwandan law and international human rights instruments, emphasizing the right to health, dignity, and equality.
Role Plays and Case Studies: Women engaged in scenario-based learning to practice addressing discriminatory attitudes in hospitals, local courts, and community gatherings.
Peer Support Groups: The training encouraged the formation of peer networks to foster solidarity, psychosocial support, and collective advocacy.
Outcomes
Enhanced Knowledge: 92% of participants reported increased awareness of their legal rights and available services.
Confidence Building: Many women expressed greater confidence to assert their rights in healthcare and justice institutions.
Community Advocacy: Participants committed to cascading the knowledge by sensitizing their peers and communities, multiplying the impact beyond the initial 500 women.
Service Provider Linkages: Connections were established between participants and local health facilities, legal aid providers, and social support structures.
Conclusion
The training successfully empowered women and girls living with HIV/AIDS to challenge stigma and discrimination, fostering resilience, rights awareness, and collective advocacy. With your cotinued support HRFRA remains committed to scaling up these initiatives to ensure sustainable inclusion, dignity, and equitable access to services for all women and girls in Rwanda.
