Summary

CAMELEON works for vulnerable children in the Philippines, especially sexually abused girls and underprivileged youth in Western Visayas region, islands of Panay and Negros. We work for their well-being with a holistic and individualized approach. We make access to education a priority for our beneficiaries. Since 2001, 920 students (girls and boys) from disadvantaged families and 10 special scholars have been accompanied. Since 2012, 474 beneficiaries have graduated and 412 found a stable job.

Challenge

The Philippines is one of the poorest countries in the world, 55% of its inhabitants living with less than 6,85$ a day. More than 13 million Filipino children, or one third of them, live below the poverty line. This poverty forces families to sacrifice the education and health of their children, and as a result, only 24% of people aged 25+ got a univeristy degree. We aim to help youth from economically disdvantaged families to access to a quality education and find a job after their graduation.

Solution

The program allows educational access (high school, university, vocational trainings), medical care (vaccination, doctors, hygiene and sexual education awareness) and leisure (team buildings) to disadvantaged youth aged 15-24 years old. In 2021, CAMELEON launched a Job placement program to support their empowerment, financial self-sufficiency, and leadership and for better access to employment. We developed a network of public and private partners who can welcome them during their internship.

Long-Term Impact

Graduates are observed to have uplifted the economic status of their families through gainful employment. Alumni give back to their communities through professional services, donations, volunteerism, leadership in the implementation of community activities. Our beneficiaries perform well in school and serve as examples for emulation of other students in the community and in school. Some of them become Youth Advocates for children's rights. They are change agents in their communities.
