By Marlene Keller | Deputy Programmes Manager
As highlighted in our previous report, the Empowering Girls project remains a vital program aimed at providing sexual health education and menstrual hygiene support to adolescent girls in Ghana. While major on-the-ground activities fully resumed in April 2025, our team has continued to strengthen partnerships, mobilize resources, and ensure program sustainability.
In line with our commitment to accountability and impact assessment, we recently carried out a monitoring and evaluation (M&E) exercise to assess the progress of sanitary pad distribution activities.
Monitoring and Evaluation Findings
On 18 July 2025, a monitoring and evaluation exercise was conducted in Ashongman to determine the extent of usage of sanitary pads distributed under the project. During this visit, the team met with 87 students, who shared their experiences with the products provided.
In total, close to 450 sanitary pads were distributed as follows:
100 pads to Ashongman
100 pads to Adenta
200 pads to the North
To ensure proper follow-up and reliable data, further monitoring visits are scheduled:
Ashongman – next week
Adenta – the following week
The North – three weeks after
These phased visits will enable the team to gather consistent data on usage, acceptance, and impact, thereby strengthening the evidence base for program effectiveness.
Ongoing Efforts
In parallel with monitoring activities, the project team continues to focus on:
Securing funding from donors, grant organizations, and corporate sponsors.
Strengthening partnerships with schools, community leaders, and health organizations to expand reach and sustainability.
Long-Term Vision
The Empowering Girls initiative continues to strive toward long-term impact by:
Improving menstrual hygiene management.
Reducing stigma and misinformation around menstruation.
Promoting safe sexual health practices among adolescent girls.
Contributing to the reduction of teenage pregnancies and sexually transmitted infections.
Through consistent monitoring and evaluation, combined with strong stakeholder engagement, we aim to ensure that every intervention translates into real, measurable improvements in the lives of young girls.
Appreciation
We extend our gratitude to all donors, partners, and supporters who make this work possible. With their continued commitment, we are confident that the Empowering Girls project will keep transforming lives and fostering gender equality in Ghana.
