Empowering Girls with Sewing Machines

By Nalub | Project Leader

Today, the Empowering Girls with Sewing Machines project continued to focus on helping girls gain practical sewing and tailoring skills that can improve their confidence, independence, and future livelihood opportunities.

The project is supporting 156 girls at Namakwa Primary School by creating an opportunity for them to learn practical skills alongside their education. Sewing is being introduced as a valuable vocational skill that the girls can use to support themselves and their families in the future.

Activities Today

Today, the girls continued participating in practical sewing activities under the guidance of those supporting the training. The girls are being encouraged to develop their skills gradually, beginning with understanding the sewing machines, handling materials safely, and practicing basic sewing techniques.

The training also encourages the girls to work together, learn from one another, and build confidence in their abilities. Those who are progressing well are encouraged to assist others who may need additional guidance.

Progress on the Ground

There is growing interest among the girls in learning sewing and understanding how the skill can become useful in their future lives. The practical nature of the training gives the girls an opportunity to learn something they can potentially use to earn an income after completing their education.

The project continues to emphasize that vocational skills can help girls become more self-reliant and give them additional opportunities beyond their academic education.

Impact on the Girls

The project is contributing to:

- Increased confidence among the participating girls.

- Development of practical sewing and tailoring skills.

- Greater interest in vocational training.

- Encouragement of creativity and teamwork.

- Preparation of girls for possible future income-generating activities.

- Increased awareness of the value of practical skills for their future.

Challenges

The main challenge remains the limited number of sewing machines compared with the number of girls who need practical training. Because many girls are participating, the available machines must be shared, which can reduce the amount of individual practice time.

The project therefore continues to need additional sewing machines and materials so that more girls can receive adequate hands-on training.

What We Expect Next

In the coming days, the project will continue with practical sewing lessons and provide more opportunities for the girls to practice. We expect the girls to gradually improve their ability to operate the machines and produce simple items.

The project team will also continue encouraging the girls to remain committed to learning and to see sewing as a skill that can contribute to their future independence.

Conclusion

Today’s activities showed that the girls remain interested in learning practical sewing skills. With continued training, encouragement, and access to sufficient sewing machines and materials, the 156 girls can develop useful skills that may open new opportunities for their future.

Karitas Relief Mission remains committed to supporting these girls and helping them gain practical skills, confidence, and hope for a more self-reliant future.
