Empowering Girls with Sewing Machines

By Kajubi Jimmy | Project Leader

Dear Donors

A total of 156 girls in our Villages are being reached through our sewing skills empowerment initiative. The girls continue to participate with enthusiasm as they develop practical skills that can help them become more confident and economically independent.

Training has now progressed from introduction to basic hands-on sewing skills. The girls are learning how to identify and safely handle sewing-machine parts, thread the machine correctly, operate the foot pedal, control stitching speed, and sew straight and curved lines on fabric. They are also being introduced to basic measurements, fabric cutting, simple pattern preparation, and the importance of accurate stitching.

During the practical sessions, the girls are beginning to practice making simple items such as handkerchiefs, small bags, and basic clothing pieces. Trainers are working closely with the girls to help them improve their accuracy, machine control, and confidence. Girls who gain proficiency are also encouraged to support those who are still learning.

The training is providing more than sewing techniques. It is creating a supportive environment where the 156 girls can learn together, develop patience and creativity, and begin thinking about how practical skills can contribute to their future livelihoods.

Progress So Far

- 156 girls served through the initiative.

- Girls have been introduced to the safe use and basic operation of sewing machines.

- Participants are practicing threading, machine control, and different stitching techniques.

- Training has progressed to basic measurements, fabric cutting, and pattern preparation.

- Girls are beginning to produce simple sewn items under the guidance of trainers.

- Peer learning is encouraging girls to support and learn from one another.

Next Steps

The next stage of training will focus on improving sewing accuracy and helping the girls complete increasingly practical projects. Sessions will introduce additional stitching techniques, garment construction, finishing, and basic skills that can eventually support small income-generating activities.

Karitas Relief Mission will continue monitoring the girls' participation and progress and sharing updates as the training develops. We are encouraged by the enthusiasm of the 156 girls and their determination to turn practical learning into opportunities for a more secure future.
