Empowering Girls with Sewing Machines

By Kajubi Jimmy | Project Leader

Dear Friends

The Empowering Girls with Sewing Machines project continues to make steady progress in Namakwa Village, Nakisunga Subcounty, Mukono District. The project is supporting 156 girls by providing practical sewing skills that can help them build confidence, develop useful vocational abilities, and prepare for future opportunities.

The girls are showing strong interest and commitment to the training. The training sessions are progressing from basic introduction and understanding of sewing machines to practical exercises. The girls are learning how to identify and handle the different parts of a sewing machine, thread the machine correctly, control the sewing speed, and practice straight and neat stitching.

As the practical sessions continue, the girls are becoming more comfortable operating the machines. They are practicing basic seams and simple sewing exercises under guidance, while those who are progressing faster are beginning to work on more detailed techniques. The trainers are encouraging the girls to learn at their own pace and support one another during practice.

The project is also helping the girls develop patience, concentration, creativity, and confidence. Many are excited about the possibility of using their skills to make clothes and other useful items in the future.

Current Progress

- 156 girls are being reached through the project.

- Practical sewing training is underway.

- Girls are learning sewing-machine handling and basic maintenance.

- Participants are practicing threading, machine control, straight stitching, and basic seams.

- Girls are gradually gaining confidence through hands-on practice.

- Training is continuing with a focus on developing practical and sustainable skills.

Next Steps

The next stage will focus on strengthening the girls' practical sewing abilities through continued hands-on training. As their skills improve, they will progress toward making simple garments and other useful products. The team will continue monitoring their progress and providing guidance so that the girls can build skills that may support future income-generating opportunities.

The enthusiasm and commitment shown by the girls continue to encourage Karitas Relief Mission as the training moves forward.
