EMPOWERING GIRLS WITH SEWING MACHINES

By Kajubi Jimmy | Project Leader

Dear Donors

On Monday, Karitas Relief Mission continued preparations for the Empowering Girls with Sewing Machines project. The activity focused on engaging the girls, project staff, and directors to better understand the needs of the girls and prepare for the beginning of vocational skills training.

The project is designed to provide vulnerable girls with practical sewing and tailoring skills that can help them become self-reliant, earn an income, and build a more secure future for themselves and their families.

Meeting with Staff, Directors and Girls

During Monday's activity, we met with staff members, directors, and some of the girls who are interested in joining the training program. The meeting provided an opportunity for everyone to share their views about the project, discuss expectations, and look at how the training can best support the girls.

The girls expressed great interest and enthusiasm about learning sewing skills. Some of them explained that they have been unable to acquire vocational skills because they lack the financial resources needed to pay for training and materials.

We encouraged the girls and assured them that the project is being developed specifically to create opportunities for girls who otherwise would not have the means to access such training.

Inspection of Training Classrooms

As part of the day's activities, we inspected the classrooms where the girls will receive their sewing and tailoring training. The inspection helped us assess the available space and determine what is needed to make the classrooms suitable and comfortable for practical learning.

The classrooms will provide a place where the girls can receive both theoretical instruction and practical experience using sewing machines.

Girls' Expectations

The girls shared how eager they are to begin their training. Their responses showed that there is a strong demand for practical vocational education among young women in the community.

Several girls explained that they have dreams of becoming tailors and eventually starting their own small businesses. However, poverty and lack of access to training opportunities have prevented them from pursuing these goals.

We assured them that once the necessary resources are available, they will be given an opportunity to join the program and begin their studies.

Progress Made

Monday's activities represented an important step forward for the project. We were able to:

- Meet with staff, directors, and interested girls.

- Listen to the girls' views, needs, and expectations.

- Inspect the classrooms where training will take place.

- Confirm strong interest among girls who want to learn sewing and tailoring.

- Identify the financial barriers preventing some girls from accessing vocational training.

- Continue preparations for the start of the training program.

Challenges

The major challenge remains limited financial resources. Many girls are interested in the program but cannot afford vocational training on their own. There is also a continuing need for additional sewing machines and other training materials to enable more girls to participate.

Next Steps

Karitas Relief Mission will continue mobilizing resources to provide sewing machines and other necessary materials. We will also continue preparing the training environment and communicating with interested girls so that they can begin their studies as soon as the required resources are available.

Our goal is to reach 156 girls with practical sewing skills and help them develop abilities that can lead to employment, self-employment, and improved household incomes.

Conclusion

Monday's meeting gave us renewed hope because we witnessed the determination and enthusiasm of the girls who want to learn. Their willingness to acquire practical skills demonstrates that this project is responding to a real need in the community.

Karitas Relief Mission remains committed to empowering these girls through vocational training and creating opportunities for them to become economically independent. With continued support from our partners and donors, we believe that the sewing machines will become tools of hope, dignity, and lasting transformation for these young women.
