Empowering Girls with Sewing Machines

By Kajubi Jimmy | Project Leader

Karitas Relief Mission is implementing the "Empowering Girls with Sewing Machines" project to equip vulnerable girls in Namakwa Village with practical sewing and tailoring skills that can help them become self-reliant, improve their livelihoods, and build a brighter future.

Many girls face financial difficulties that prevent them from accessing vocational training and acquiring skills for employment or self-employment. Through this project, Karitas Relief Mission aims to provide opportunities for 156 girls to learn tailoring and gain practical skills that can help them support themselves and their families.

2. Activities Undertaken

As part of the project's preparation and implementation efforts, Karitas Relief Mission held a meeting with staff, directors, and some of the girls interested in participating in the training.

During the meeting, the team discussed the girls' interest in vocational training, the available facilities, and the preparations needed to make the project successful.

The team also inspected the classrooms where the girls are expected to receive their training. This visit helped assess the learning environment and identify the preparations needed before the training can be fully implemented.

The girls who participated in the meeting expressed great excitement and enthusiasm about learning sewing and tailoring. They explained their desire to acquire practical skills but also shared the financial challenges that prevent them from joining vocational training programmes.

Karitas Relief Mission encouraged the girls and assured them that the organization remains committed to helping them access training as resources become available.

3. Target Beneficiaries

The project aims to benefit 156 girls from vulnerable backgrounds in Namakwa Village and the surrounding community.

The intended beneficiaries are girls who need opportunities to develop practical vocational skills and improve their chances of earning an income. Through tailoring training, they will have the opportunity to learn a valuable trade that can help them pursue self-employment, establish small businesses, and contribute to their households.

4. Progress Made So Far

The project has made progress in preparing for the training and engaging the intended beneficiaries.

Key developments include:

-Community engagement:  Staff, directors, and interested girls have participated in discussions about the project.

- Classroom inspection: The proposed training classrooms have been inspected as part of the preparation process.

- Beneficiary interest: The girls have demonstrated strong motivation and a willingness to learn sewing and tailoring.

- Identification of barriers: Financial constraints and the shortage of sewing machines and training resources have been identified as important challenges.

- Continued commitment: Karitas Relief Mission has reassured the girls that efforts will continue to mobilize resources to enable them to participate in the training.

Although preparations are progressing, additional resources are still needed to provide adequate practical training opportunities for all 156 girls.

5. Challenges Encountered

The main challenge facing the project is insufficient funding to meet the cost of sewing machines, training materials, and other essential requirements.

Some girls are eager to join the programme but cannot afford vocational training. In addition, the available sewing machines are not sufficient to provide every girl with adequate practical learning time.

Without additional support, the project may not be able to accommodate all the intended beneficiaries or provide them with the consistent hands-on practice required to develop their skills.

6. Expected Outcomes

With adequate funding and the necessary equipment, the project expects to achieve the following outcomes:

1. Enable 156 girls to access sewing and tailoring training.

2. Improve the girls' practical vocational skills and confidence.

3. Equip participants with skills that may help them secure employment or establish small tailoring businesses.

4. Increase opportunities for girls to earn an income and become financially independent.

5. Reduce economic vulnerability by creating pathways toward sustainable livelihoods.

6. Encourage girls to become positive role models and contribute to the development of their communities.

These are the intended outcomes, and their achievement will depend on securing the resources needed to implement the training successfully.

7. Next Steps

Karitas Relief Mission plans to continue working with staff, directors, community members, and potential supporters to advance the project.

The next priorities are to:

- Mobilize funds to purchase additional sewing machines.

- Procure fabric, thread, scissors, measuring tapes, and other necessary training materials.

- Prepare the classrooms for practical training.

- Support girls who cannot afford to join vocational training.

- Organize structured sewing and tailoring lessons once the required resources are available.

- Monitor participation and document the girls' progress, skills development, and achievements.

8. Appeal for Support

Karitas Relief Mission appeals to generous donors, partners, and well-wishers to support the *Empowering Girls with Sewing Machines* project.

Your contribution can help provide sewing machines and essential training materials, giving vulnerable girls an opportunity to learn a practical skill and work toward a more secure future.

For these girls, a sewing machine represents more than equipment. It represents an opportunity to learn, earn, support their families, and develop confidence in their abilities.

With your support, we can move closer to our goal of reaching all 156 girls and creating meaningful opportunities for their future.

 9. Conclusion

The Empowering Girls with Sewing Machines project continues to offer hope to girls who are eager to learn but face financial and material barriers. Recent discussions with staff, directors, and interested girls, together with the inspection of the proposed classrooms, have helped advance preparations for the programme.

However, more resources are needed before the intended training can be fully delivered. Karitas Relief Mission remains committed to mobilizing support and working toward a future in which every participating girl has the opportunity to develop useful vocational skills.

We sincerely thank all our supporters and potential partners for their interest in empowering vulnerable girls. Together, we can help transform their determination into practical skills, greater independence, and hope for a better future.
