Empowering Girls with Sewing Machines

Karitas Relief Mission is implementing the *Empowering Girls with Sewing Machines* project to support 156 vulnerable and disadvantaged girls in Uganda by providing access to sewing machines and practical tailoring skills. The project aims to equip the girls with vocational skills that can help them become self-reliant, improve their future livelihood opportunities, and contribute to their families and communities.

2. Activities and Progress

Karitas Relief Mission has engaged project staff, directors, and the participating girls in discussions about the project and preparations for training. The team has reviewed the available facilities and discussed the girls’ expectations and readiness to participate.

The girls have expressed great enthusiasm and a strong desire to begin learning how to operate sewing machines and develop practical tailoring skills. Their commitment demonstrates the importance of creating opportunities for girls who face financial barriers to vocational education.

The project currently has 10 sewing machines, but additional machines and training resources are needed to support all 156 girls adequately. Practical training has not yet been reported as having commenced.

3. Importance of the Project

The project seeks to enable girls to acquire practical skills in sewing, garment making, clothing repair, and tailoring. These skills may help them pursue employment, start small tailoring businesses, and generate income in the future.

By investing in vocational education, Karitas Relief Mission hopes to promote girls’ empowerment, economic independence, confidence, and long-term resilience.

4. Challenges

The main challenge remains insufficient resources to provide enough sewing machines, materials, and training support for all 156 girls. Without additional equipment and financial assistance, the project cannot yet deliver practical training to the full target group.

 5. Next Steps

Karitas Relief Mission plans to continue mobilizing resources to acquire additional sewing machines and essential training materials. The organization will prepare the training facilities, organize the participating girls into suitable learning groups, commence practical lessons when resources are available, and monitor their progress.

The organization will also explore opportunities to help the girls apply their skills to future income-generating activities.

 6. Conclusion and Appeal

The enthusiasm demonstrated by the girls gives Karitas Relief Mission hope that this initiative can make a meaningful contribution to their future. However, additional support is urgently needed to move from preparation to practical training.
