Dear Donors
1. Moving Beyond Traditional Education
For many vulnerable girls in our communities, completing formal education does not always guarantee an opportunity to earn a living. Some come from families that cannot afford further education or professional training, leaving them with limited opportunities to become economically independent.
Karitas Relief Mission believes that every girl deserves an opportunity to discover her abilities, develop practical skills and build a future with dignity.
This belief is the foundation of our sewing machines initiative, which seeks to equip 156 girls with tailoring and garment-making skills.
2. Listening to the Girls Themselves
One important development in this initiative has been our direct engagement with the girls.
Through meetings and consultations, we have listened to their interests, expectations and personal ambitions. Many expressed excitement about learning tailoring because they see it as a practical skill that can help them earn money and support their families.
Their enthusiasm has encouraged us to move beyond simply providing sewing machines. We are developing a structured vocational training program that will give the girls the opportunity to learn, practise and eventually use their skills professionally.
3. Turning the Vision into a Practical Program
Following our consultations, we have started preparing the first phase of training, which is scheduled to begin in January 2027.
The program will introduce the girls to practical lessons, including:
- Operating and maintaining sewing machines.
- Taking measurements and cutting fabrics.
- Designing and making different garments.
- Sewing school uniforms and household items.
- Repairing and modifying clothes.
- Basic entrepreneurship and business management.
Our intention is to ensure that the girls graduate with practical abilities rather than simply attending theoretical lessons.
4. Building the Necessary Training Capacity
At present, our preparations are focused on securing the equipment and resources needed to accommodate the growing number of interested girls.
We currently have 10 sewing machines, but additional machines are needed to serve all 156 beneficiaries effectively.
Beyond the machines, we also need fabrics, sewing accessories, qualified instructors and other training materials.
We are therefore working to mobilize additional support so that the program can reach its intended beneficiaries.
5. What Success Will Look Like
Our vision is to see these girls transform from trainees into skilled young women capable of creating opportunities for themselves.
In the long term, we hope to support graduates in establishing small tailoring businesses, accessing employment opportunities and producing garments for their communities.
Some may eventually become trainers themselves, passing their knowledge to other vulnerable girls.
This will create a lasting impact beyond the initial 156 beneficiaries.
6. Our Biggest Challenge
The greatest challenge remains insufficient financial resources to expand the program. The interest among girls is growing, but our available equipment and training resources are still limited.
We do not want enthusiasm and willingness to learn to be wasted simply because the necessary equipment is unavailable.
7. An Invitation to Invest in Girls' Futures
Karitas Relief Mission sees this initiative as an investment in human potential. A sewing machine may appear to be a simple piece of equipment, but in the hands of a trained girl, it can become a source of employment, income, confidence and independence.
We invite our donors and partners to help us equip these 156 girls with the skills and resources they need to build better futures.
Our goal is not merely to teach girls how to sew. It is to give them an opportunity to become self-reliant, support their families and contribute meaningfully to their communities.
