Read What Is Happening in Guatemala! Rosa Tells About Her Internship!

By Melissa Vlach | Kateri Fund Board Chair

Rosa demonstrates Echofilters.
As an intern at the Association of Parents and Friends of People with Disabilities (ADISA), Rosa has been participating in all the activities carried out by the association in the area of Humanitarian Aid, Education, and Economic Power. Her skills and training in the area of social work allow her to contribute new ideas and strategies.
Last month she aided in the last delivery of nutritional kits and Eco filters to the parents of children at risk of malnutrition. ADISA coordinates with the cities and the different public institutions such as the Secretariat of Food and Nutritional Security SESAN and the health centers during the identification of children at risk of malnutrition and the delivery of the nutritional kits.
In the area of education she is in charge of giving talks to children in different public schools on the topics of disability, types of disability, and other topics related to ADISA’s work. She presented the information to the children by creating lotteries, puzzles, and word games. Rosa says she likes what she does and she is growing in her career.

Rosa gave talks to the midwives of Santiago Atitlán on various themes and was the translator. Most of the midwives do not understand the Spanish language but are native speakers of Tz'utujil. Her translation allowed the information to be understood by all participants, ensuring that they could apply what they learned in their daily work and in improving the health of the community.

Rosa said, “Through my internship I can grow professionally and gain the work experience I need to find a permanent position in my Social Work career.”

Rosa is working to prepare herself for a job that will support her and contribute to the support of her family. Her participation in the Kateri Fund’s Intern Program gives her the extra support she needs in the transition from studies to work. It is the hardest one for the young women to make.
