FMIC Leads the Way Towards Sustainable Healthcare

By Sultan Ahmed | Project Leader

FMIC is committed to finding innovative and sustainable solutions that strengthen healthcare delivery in Afghanistan. Although this project has not yet received financial support through GlobalGiving, FMIC has continued to move forward using its own resources and has already invested in and inaugurated a 1 MW solar power plant.

The solar plant is now contributing clean energy to FMIC's operations, meeting part of the hospital's substantial electricity needs and reducing its reliance on electricity from the national grid. For a hospital providing essential healthcare services around the clock, this investment is an important step toward greater energy security, operational efficiency and long-term sustainability.

The plant is expected to generate approximately 1.4–1.8 million kilowatt-hours of clean electricity annually and reduce carbon emissions by around 300 tonnes each year, while helping FMIC reduce operating costs and protect essential healthcare services from rising and fluctuating energy costs.

But FMIC recognises that there is still a long way to go. A hospital of FMIC's scale requires a continuous and reliable supply of energy, and further investment is needed to expand sustainable energy solutions and maximise the benefits of this pioneering initiative.

Your support can help take this further

FMIC has already demonstrated its commitment by investing its own resources. What is needed now is the support of donors and partners to build on what has already been achieved.

Support through GlobalGiving can help FMIC continue and expand this sustainability initiative, allowing the hospital to further reduce its dependence on conventional electricity, strengthen its financial and operational resilience, and increase the environmental benefits of renewable energy.

More importantly, with the right support, FMIC's investment can become a model for sustainable healthcare in Afghanistan. By demonstrating that a major healthcare institution can invest in renewable energy even in a challenging environment, FMIC hopes to inspire other hospitals and institutions across the country to explore similar solutions.

FMIC has taken the first step with its own resources. With the support of GlobalGiving donors, we can take this journey much further—and turn one hospital's investment into an example that others can follow.
