EMPOWERING MENSTRUAL DIGNITY:GIRLS WITH DISABILITY

The Hope Foundation for African Women (HFAW) recently conducted an inclusive health and safety outreach at Ongata Rongai Primary School in Kajiado County, bringing together boys and girls for conversations on menstrual health, hygiene, personal safety, and life skills.

The session created a safe and supportive space where children, including those with disabilities, could openly learn about puberty and body changes. For many, it was the first time discussing these topics in a school setting.

During the session, girls learned practical menstrual hygiene practices including how to properly use sanitary pads, maintain personal cleanliness, and safely dispose of used materials. Boys were also engaged in conversations that encouraged respect and understanding around menstruation, helping to reduce stigma and promote empathy.

Beyond menstrual health, the children participated in discussions on body autonomy, safe and unsafe touch, and the importance of speaking up when they feel unsafe.

When asked what they learned during the session, several children shared powerful reflections:

"I learned how to identify risky behaviour and how to protect myself," one pupil said confidently.

Another girl shared, "Now I understand menstruation better and I am not afraid when my body changes."

A boy added, "I learned that boys should respect girls and protect each other."

Another pupil proudly said, "If someone touches me in a bad way, I now know I should report to a teacher or a trusted adult."

To support the children practically, HFAW distributed sanitary pads and undergarments to girls, and boxers and hygiene supplies to boys—items that help promote dignity, confidence, and comfort in school.

The outreach was warmly received by the school community. Teachers appreciated the open discussions that encouraged confidence, awareness, and mutual respect among learners.

At HFAW, we remain committed to ensuring that every child—especially those with disabilities—has access to knowledge, protection, and dignity. Through such engagements, we continue working toward safer and more inclusive learning environments.
