Project Report | Oct 4, 2025
Still "Empowering the Future", Globally.

By Kritika Chopra | Administration & Fund Development Lead

Dear Supporters,

Thank you for your generosity in continuing to support the Empowering the Futureproject.

This crucial cross-country initiative is a collaborative effort between Aura Freedom and New Light, rooted in the long-standing and loyal friendship between our two founders. Born from feminist activism and a shared desire to see a world free from gender-based violence and human trafficking, this vision continues to come alive through this project today.

While this is our first report for Empowering the Future on GlobalGiving, this project has been making meaningful impacts since its inception in 2021 during the Covid-19 pandemic. With your ongoing support, we can ensure that these vital activities continue to grow and thrive.

At the heart of this work is New Light’s Soma Home, a full-time residential facility for girls ages 8–18 who are at high risk of gender-based violence, sexual exploitation, human trafficking, child marriage, and related harms. Many of these girls come from red-light districts (such as Kalighat, Sovabazar, Sonagachhi, Chetla, and Khidirpur) or other vulnerable communities, with consent and cooperation from their mothers. It is through Soma Home that this project is being conducted.

Directly as a result of your generous support, we are continuing to be able to provide a safe, nurturing, and empowering environment where young girls at risk of violence can grow, equipping them with life skills, education and awareness to both prevent exploitation, and promote well-being.

Your donations directly support:

  • Safe and Dignified Housing (at Soma Home)
  • Nutrition and Healthcare
  • School Support, Tutoring, and Skills-Building
  • Mental Health Support and Counselling
  • Extra-Curricular Activities (including classical and modern dance, art, computer and tech training, boxing, sports, cracks, cooking, and more)
  • Awareness and Education to Prevent Gender-Based Violence
  • Rehabilitation, Support and Healing for Girls who’ve experienced Gender-Based Violence

Soma Home has been in operation for 17 years, providing institutional expertise, local relationships, and infrastructure to home and support girls both at risk of and who have already experienced violence - and with your support, we can continue to ensure that the Soma Home is able to run this program for years to come.

With gratitude and in solidarity,
