Empowering the girl child

By Hannah Bangura | Field Officer

Dear Donors and GlobalGiving,

Empowering the Girl through Education Project is a Life Changing programme activity that has played tremendous roles in the life of children and women as a whole in the northern part of Sierra LEone. This project has change the narrative in terms of not sending the girl child to school. It was actually a daunting task to change a long aged tradition, which has limited women and girls to the kitchen or the back. The project continues to make inroads in various communities due to its impacts in the lives of girls.  The project is becoming more popular than expected due to its role in the lives of these girl children, giving rights and power to girls has been the bedrock of this project, which has helped a lot of girls regain their lost dignities.

In view of the above, the organisation has engaged in mass sensitisation in various communities (Moria Pan House,  Mathinka, Mokondo, Laya, Kerefay Loko Etc) about the important of educating the girl child and also frustrate the efforts of the cultural norms in these communities, which has prevented girls in the past to access education. According to one traditional leaders in one these  communities they have never got such an opportunity to receive messages and support from any organisation. But with our intervention it will make a huge difference in the lives of these girls and women in their communities. These communities are hard to reach due to the bad road network.

Tech for changes, an organisation based in the UK have partnered with us to train 500 girls in ICT, we have bought 10 computers and projector for the computer classes.  This training is introducing these girls to the ICT world, and have also change their mentality about computers. According to one girl, this is her first time to see or touch a computer, this moment has brought a lot of job to her and her family.

The project still continues with it engagement to end or stop early and forceful marriages. From our engagement, we came to realise that bike riders are more in the habit of impregnating young girls, our focus was shifted to engage these riders in an effort to cushion this situation.

We are working very hard along with law makers to popularise the child right act, so people will be well aware about it and also emphases on the dangers of rape and sexual assaults.

With this we want to say thank you for your continued supports and we hope we can able to support more children if funds are available.

Thank you and God bless you abundantly for putting smiles into the faces of the children
