Challenge

In Japan, nearly 30,000 children live in institutional care due to abuse, neglect, or loss of family support. While care homes provide shelter and basic needs, children often lack consistent role models, enriching experiences, and experiential learning opportunities where they can make decisions for themselves. Many struggle with low self-esteem, difficulty trusting others, and an inability to envision a positive future. This lack of long-term, personalized support can lead to ongoing challenges

Solution

Mirai no Mori provides year-round nature-based programs that foster essential life skills for youth in care homes. Children gain confidence, communication skills, and a sense of belonging through outdoor learning and mentorship. Our curriculum supports each stage: elementary and middle school campers, high school participants in the Leadership in Training (LIT) program, and graduates who have aged out of the care system-creating a pathway of growth into adulthood.

Long-Term Impact

Children in Mirai no Mori's programs grow into young adults with resilience and self-awareness. Campers build trust and social skills; high schoolers in the LIT program develop leadership and career readiness; and graduates stay connected through volunteering and workshops. Volunteers and corporate partners deepen their understanding of Japan's child welfare system and often become long-term advocates. Together, we build an inclusive society where all children can thrive.
