Sisters in the Aftercare Program

Greetings to all! The team at Hope For Our Sisters Inc., in partnership with the Aftercare team at CEML Hospital in Lubango, Angola, is pleased to bring you our latest impact report for our project to "Enable 50 Women in Angola to Generate Income.". As always, we are so thankful for the support of each of you in bringing this program to our sisters who have suffered from fistula and are living at the patient villas in CEML either awaiting or recovering from surgery. This program equips them with literacy, numeracy, and language classes and teaches them marketable skills such as gardening, sewing, and crafting that they can take forward into their lives outside of the hospital to support themselves and others in their families and communities. These women are able, and amazing, and so deserving of these opportunities. We cannot thank you enough for helping them to realize dreams to learn new things and become more self-sufficient.

The team reports that in the last few months, the program has carried on as usual with lots of new sisters flowing in and out, around 28 women on average each month, but their stories and smiles are no less wonderful to behold, even after all they’ve been through. The team says, “it’s a big joy for us to see that they recover their joy, self-esteem, they feel like they can live their normal life again after months or years.”

The women continue to sew with the new machines purchased for them, Elisabeth (whose story of her own recovery we have shared in past reports) leading their classes. She is in charge of every sewing project being taken on - a big job, but a rewarding one. Despite the cold of the dry season in Angola at this time, the women heat the classroom with a small stove fire and their songs each day. They have recently learned to make earrings (modeled above), and other beautiful items like woven bags and decorated flip-flops.

We hope you are continuing to enjoy these reports every four months and, as always, we welcome your feedback or suggestions to Cara, one of our Board members, at cbrooks@hopeforoursisters.org. For more regular updates on all our programs, please visit our website and sign up for our Constant Contact updates 1-2 times per month, or follow us on Facebook! Thank you again for your incredible generosity and support of this cause and these amazing women.
