Thriving from the land

By Benedicto Hosea | Project Leadermazmsunflo

Rural families, most survive from what land and nature offer them. Land is widely used for crop and food production while weather determine the rewards. In the context of global climate challenges, Mboni ya Vijana set the sustainable mode of productions especially in Agriculture to ensure climate change does not harm food and income system in poor families.

Since 2016 to date under our initiative, we have trained and supported over 38,000 beneficiaries (youth, women and most vulnerable individuals) in sustainable farming and initial investment capital. The families increased food crops yield by 350% by the use of bio-organic (biochar, Fish hydrolysate, composite, lactobacillus) fertilizers, clean and high-quality seeds (maize, cassava, sunflower), and proper farm preparation and crops management. Also, we engaged the farmers in managing the environments especially by trees planting led to 1,600,000 indigenous trees planted, and soil health and carbon capture by trees planted, biochar and other bio-soil nutrients use in crops farming.

Those input have thrived food and income securities in the families we supported by over 300% combined while balancing the climate and environmental livability. Beyond food, income and environmental impact, the modal has built sustainable production in the community, improved living standards by improved and better housing, education and health improvement, and access to other locally services improved.

The impact Stories

We are thrilled to have the community that gives the feedback about the achievement from our initiative. Below are the impact stories collected from the field during our initiative beneficiaries monitoring;

Meet Goodluck, a 24 years old young man who raised by his mother and grand mother at Zeze village. He is the primary beneficiary of Mboni ya Vijana received training and financial support for sustainable farming and entrepreneurship. He says; “I born in a very poor family and raised by mother and grand mother after my father disappeared when I was a pregnant to my mother. When I was 6 years old, I joined Zeze primary School but I ended it in less than 3 months because I had not support from my family and I could not saw my education future. I tried to find the help from my relative but they were unable to help me until I found and joined Mboni ya Vijana to mentor me. From zero, uneducated, and impoverished youth, I learned welding, farming, entrepreneurship and other sills with Mboni ya Vijana. I run my life from my works those I couldn’t have made without Mboni ya Vijana’s coaching and supervisions. I am now finishing my best house in the village and I am the supporter to my family’s foods, bills (water, medicines, communications, etc), and other family need. I completely believe and accrediting, my life and the family transformed to the best because Mboni ya Vijana made it”. He finished.

Imerida is a single mother of 4 children lived difficult life in taking care of her children alone. She always felt income and food was the responsibility of the children’s father, however; she could not benefit from that service. Her story is a bit tearing of joy to hear how she stived from extreme poverty to prosperous life.

“I was not able to feed my children with neither healthier and nutritious food nor twice meals in a day. It was difficult to earn even a coin of Tanzanian shilling in a day otherwise I secure locally daily labour.  My poor house was full of cries from the hungry children made me sorrowful always. With inconsistency, I chosen to pay my days learning and testing sustainable farming and entrepreneurship skills with Mboni ya Vijana. In 2022, I bought two acres of land for farming which I planted with clean and high-quality cassava variety introduced by Mboni ya Vijana. In 2024 I earned two million Tanzanian shillings from cassava sales. I added another two farms making them four. In 2025, I harvested huge yields of cassava, sunflower, and maize enabled me earn more than 9 million TZS with enough food reserve. Since 2025 to date, I employ over 70 youth and women to help me farms tilling, harvesting and processing crops.

Now, I have; fully independent feelings and life without a marriage, enough food and money to support my children in schools, healthcare, clothes, good bedding, and other needs. I mentor other women who have bad lives like I was, to follow the same ways to me despite that I understand we think and decide differently. Imerida’s story”

“No more regret to poor harvesting and food security because of lack of fertilizers” – the sentence Deus said when he was asked ‘how industrial fertilizers price increase does limit your farming?” He reflected the change that he has made to adapt the make and use of locally made bio-fertilizers. Here is his story;

“I was not able to harvest 3 bags of maize per acre because I couldn’t buy fertilizers due to my income poverty. The land and weather also are poor and can not support for good crop yields. I couldn’t wait to jump into making and use of biochar, composite, and other bio-fertilizers combined after the training and support from Mboni ya Vijana. In the past two years, 2024/2025 and 2025/2026), I have registered a so much success in maize and cassava yields. From 3 bags (approx. 7kg per each) of maize harvested per acre in 2023/2024 season to 16 bags in 2024/2025 season and 24 bags in 2025/2026 farming season are tremendous success in my life. At my age, I use my outputs for supporting my family’s food and other needs, diversifying the income into businesses and invest in agriculture” he finished.
