Fighting Malnutrition in Nyanza – Village of Hope Kabisine
Due to Coronavirus, Rwanda was locked down from March 22 – until June 1. Movement, gathering of people and businesses were shut down. This prevented us from beginning the new Village of Hope project in Kabisine until 2 weeks ago. The immediate need was for food to survive the almost 3 month lockdown, so Dufatanye raised the funds to distribute food on a daily basis reaching over 40,000 people in desperate need.
We started the Village of Hope project with training the village on how to rear laying hens. We followed Covid19 guidelines and split the trainings into 2 groups, so that people could keep their distance. Our trainers went to the village and met with the people out in the sun and explained for them how to feed, water, care for chickens, as well as, disease and nests.
The people were super excited to have Dufatanye Organization come and train them. They still can’t believe that anyone cares about them this much to take the time and help them to grow in their agricultural knowledge. We had 105 of the village attend the training and then each received 2 laying hens to begin their opportunity to receive eggs daily and begin to grow a business. A total of 210 laying hens were distributed to 105 attendees.
Two of the attendees were chosen to be the ones to weekly check in on the students and the health of their chickens. This has been a great start to Village of Hope Kabisines chance to improve their agricultural practices, community and village sustainability. They are excited to have this opportunity and Dufatanye is happy to see them grow, improve and bring themselves out of extreme poverty.
