Hello!

Wow, it's only been 3 months since our last update but so much has happened! We are excited to share what we've been up to. The last three months have been spent mainly preparing for the NPT PrepCom (Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty Preparatory Conference), where we organized a student orientation for over 45 students from 7 countries, hosted a number of events with Hibakusha from Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and had two amazing teenage girls with us to share their stories of activism.

For our orientation, we partnered with NYU's International Relations Club, they helped secure the room for us.

Christian Ciobanu, who we are very sad to say is no longer with PEAC, worked very hard to organize these briefings and events for all the students:

  • Ireland Delegation
  • Youth-Hibakusha- ICRC Exchange, Breakfast
  • Liechtenstein Delegation
  • USA Delegation
  • Kazakhstan Delegation
  • New Zealand Delegation
  • Egypt Delegation
  • NPT Chair, H.E. Mr. Syed Mohamad Hasrin Aidid

Christian also spearheaded the Youth Appeal which was delivered by Deutsche Friedensgesellschaft - Vereinigte KriegsdienstgegnerInnen (DF-VK)–Youth statement, Ms. Mandy Lussenhop

At the UN, we co-hosting a side event on the Hibakusha Appeal with Religions for Peace Japan. Rebecca Irby of PEAC Institute chaired the side event. The speakers were  Mr. Sueichi Kido, Secretary General of Nihon Hidankyo; Mr. Jiro Hamasumi, Assistant Secretary-General of Nihon Hidankyo; and Rev. Masamichi Kamiya of Religions for Peace and Rene and Yasmine, the two powerhouse teenagers!

With the same speakers, we also help a torch passing ceremony at The Bellwether Gallery. This was such a moving event! We had about 60 people join us. The Hibakusha, Mr. Sueichi Kido and Mr. Jiro Hamasumi shared their testimony of what happened over 74 years ago when the atomic bombs were dropped. For many people, this was the first time they hear first-hand testimony and they were very moved.  After the testimonies, Rene and Yasmine shared why fighting for a nuclear-free world is so important for them and challenged the rest of us to make a pledge to join the fight. We then opened the floor and had everyone share how they felt and what they would do to pass on what they learned.

We are continuing to ask all those we come in contact with to pass the appeal on to others. We handed in over 9.4 Million signatures but it's not even a tenth of the way to our goal. Will you help? Please forward to your family and friends: https://www.peacinstitute.org/endnukesnow

Excited to see where the next three months take us. We hope you'll join us on this journey!

In Revolutionary Love,
Rebecca
