Summary

In Sri Lanka, 50% of female students face period poverty, lacking access to sanitary products, proper disposal facilities, and clean washrooms. This leads to absenteeism, mental stress, and social stigma. Our project provides sanitary pads to students and improves school infrastructure with incinerators, sanitary bins, and better washrooms. By addressing these needs, we promote dignified menstruation management, empowering girls to succeed academically and socially.

Challenge

Menstrual health is a major challenge for female students in Sri Lanka. The high cost of sanitary products and lack of adequate facilities force many girls to use unhygienic alternatives or miss school. This impacts their academic performance, confidence, and mental well-being. Schools often lack proper disposal options, causing discomfort and reinforcing the stigma around menstruation, making it harder for girls to manage their periods with dignity.

Solution

Our project will distribute free sanitary pads and equip schools with menstrual health facilities. Each selected student will receive two sanitary packs annually, easing the financial burden. We will install sanitary bins in school washrooms and provide incinerators for safe disposal of menstrual products. Improved washrooms will offer girls a private, hygienic space to manage their periods, creating a healthier, supportive environment that helps them manage menstruation with confidence.

Long-Term Impact

This project will improve hygiene, reduce absenteeism, and foster an inclusive school environment. By providing sanitary products and infrastructure, we will help girls stay in school during their menstrual cycles, enhancing academic outcomes and well-being. Over time, this initiative will empower a more educated generation of young women in Sri Lanka, ensuring no girl misses school or feels ashamed due to menstruation, leading to long-term improvements in education and gender equity.
