Dear supporters,
Thank you so much for your contributions to Rotary's "End Polio Now" Campaign. Great progress is being made in the fight to eradicate polio. Polio cases in India are lower than ever, with only 1 official case of polio being reported thus far in 2011. In comparison with 19 cases for the same time frame last year, we are very optimistic about this great decrease in cases.
Mop-up immunization activities for parts of Northern India have been carried out in early May. Further Sub-national Immunization Days (SNIDs) using bivalent oral polio vaccine (bOPV) are planned to begin on 22 May in several key high-risk districts.
Despite the strong progress achieved, efforts are continuing, in particular in West Bengal from where the only case of 2011 has been reported. The country continues to treat it as a serious event requiring ongoing and large-scale response. In some areas, vaccination coverage gaps remain, and efforts by state authorities are underway to rapidly address these.
We are making great strides to eradicate polio, and India is the one remaining endemic country with the lowest number of new polio cases. However, we cannot stop our fight yet. We are "This Close" to eradicating this terrible disease from the world and we still need your help. Thank you again for your generous donation - Rotary, as well as our partners in the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, are extremely grateful.
