Beldocs and New Legislation for 2018
By Jamie Brandel | Production Manager
So far in 2018, Tricked has been invited to be screened at the Beldocs International Film Festival in Belgrade, Serbia as part of their celebration of 70 years since the Universal Declaraion of Human Rights was enacted. Jane Wells and the film will be part of a 3-film screening and a panel discussion about anti-trafficking as a human right on May 8th. 6 years later, Tricked is still making headway and is on the vanguard of change.
In addition, at 3 Generations, producing Tricked did not mark the end of our work monitoring and fighting against sex trafficking domestically and around the globe. Although parts are controversial, we're very excited to hear about Congress passing the 'Fight Online Sex Trafficking Act', as well as Craiglist and Backpage also taking its part in shutting down part of its sites that facilitate sex trafficking. We have been keeping track of legislation that targets sellers and organizations facilitating sellers, supporting victims, and education that aims to reduce trafficking locally and internationally.
Tricked is available for streaming on Netflix and has been translated in to 15 languages. We implore our supports to view the film if they have not already done so in order to truly understand the urgency and importance of ending sex trafficking in the United States.

"Tricked" and the Silence Breakers
By Maggie McNish | Production Assistant
On December 13th, 3 Generations celebrated the 4th anniversary of the release of Tricked on Netflix. Since 2013, the film has been has been viewed in 15 countries. In the United States, it has been viewed across nearly all possible platforms -- film festivals, movie theatres, universities, streaming services, and cable. It is still available on Netflix as well as for purchase on our website. We are also continuing to screen Tricked for educational purposes, most recently at Rutgers University in New Jersey.
The relevance of our work combating sex trafficking is expanding on a daily basis as more and more Americans are finally grasping the prevalence of sexual violence in every aspect of society. The Harvey Weinstein revelations sparked a pattern of swift and severe consequences against men who have committed acts sexual violence, and Time magazine selected the “Silence Breakers” as person of the year. One victim is actually filing a lawsuit against Weinstein under sex trafficking laws.
Our founder and executive director Jane Wells wrote a piece for the Huffington Post titled “Pimps, Politicians, Doctors, Celebrities, and #MeToo,” which draws a connection between pimps and men in positions of power within workplaces. She focuses on Olympic gold medalist Aly Raisman who spoke out against the U.S. team doctor Lawrence Nassar. Jane says that Aly’s story “could have come from the lips of any of the young girls we interviewed making our documentary Tricked.”

The Communications Decency Act and more
By Maggie McNish | Production Assistant
At 3 Generations, producing Tricked did not mark the end of our work monitoring and fighting against sex trafficking nationally and around the globe. We have been keeping track of legislation that targets sellers, organizations that promote supporting victims, and education that helps to identify and reduce trafficking locally.
Currently, there is a bipartisan bill working its way through Congress that would change Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, making it easier for law enforcement to go after websites like Backpage that advertise human trafficking. Silicon Valley is lobbying against the bill, believing that it will have a negative impact on internet privacy and freedoms. This is a clear cut division between lawmakers working together to end a human rights injustice and companies selfishly wanting to protect their own economic interests.
On our own front, we recently had a chance to catch up with Dan Steele, the police sergeant featured in Tricked to hear about his continued work fighting sex trafficking in Denver and his new job as investigator for the District Attorney in the 18th Colorado District. We are proud to have documented his voice within this battle.
Tricked is available for streaming on Netflix and has been translated into 15 languages. We implore our supporters to view the film if they have not already in order to truly understand the urgency of ending sex trafficking in the United States.
