Introducing Junior
Even though the construction and finishing off of Kitty City is still a few months away, the cats of Kitty City are loving their new home. Some are making us take notice by showing us their amazing personalities. The stories of these wonderful cats are worth sharing. For this newsletter, I've asked Junior, our working cat at Kitty City, to say a few words.
“Hi I’m Junior, and I LOVE dogs.
I just want to be one of them. I love to hang out with them. Before Kitty City came along you could frequently find me trying to sneak into their Kennels...
Did you know I am the only cat here to be a part of LAW's staff team? I am their on-site puppy sitter. Yes, REALLY!
My role is to teach the young pups how to be cool with cats, which can make it easier for them to find their forever homes. If you’re ever passing by, you might catch me in the puppy pen having a cuddle or a good old wrestle.
I’m so proud of my role here taking care of the puppies and kittens. Thanks so much to all the Global Giving supporters for making my job possible.”
Animal Love Locks!
Here at Kitty City we want everyone to celebrate cats, and especially a special cat. We decided to give everyone visiting Lanta Animal Welfare's Kitty City the opportunity to give their favorite cat a special place in Kitty City, with an Animal Love Lock.
We may not be in Paris, but we can steal a a great idea, especially in time for Valentine's Day. For a small donation, of 500 B/$15 US, visitors can decorate a small padlock, include a name, or a design, of their favorite cat. And then lock the padlock in a special place on our Wall of Love.
Not only is this a super way to commemorate a cat, past or present, but the donation goes towards sterilizing a cat, which prevents the suffering of hundreds of other cats here on Koh Lanta.
Deng - A Dog Story
Lanta Animal Welfare rescues both cats and dogs so I would be remiss if I didn't include a dog story in this newsletter.
Deng is a volunteer favorite, so I asked him to say a few words.
"Hey, I'm Deng Mia and I am looking for a forever home!
I was brought to LAW last year after being hit by a car. My front leg was so badly injured it had to be removed. But I'm doing so well on my 3 legs - I'm as swift as the wind!
Losing a leg was easy to get over, but the rejection I have gone through has been my greatest challenge. While I was living on Lanta Noi people were afraid to touch me, so human contact has always been a bit of a mystery. Now that I have had contact with the wonderful volunteers here, I love it!
But I do have emotional scars and I need things to happen in slow motion. Otherwise, I get confused and scared. Life isn't easy, but I'm trying to trust. I do know that the people here are my friends."
Kitty City Walkway Slates
Rescued Cats on Koh Lanta wouldn't have their safe-haven, Kitty City, without you amazing donors. As we are nearing closer to our goal, we are promoting a campaign, here on Koh Lanta, with the local businesses and the visitors who tour our Facility.
Our garden is full of these large oval slates. We thought it would be amazing to decorate each slate with a cat design. However, it was overwhelming to come up with 40 good cat designs, so we decided to ask others to do this for us. We came up with the Kitty City Walkway Campaign.
The Kitty City Walkway Campaign:
Supporting our cats takes a lot of work. With your help, and that of others, we know we will eventually reach out goal.
In Closing
As always, the entire staff and volunteer base at Lanta Animal Welfare are so grateful for your donations. Kitty City is providing to be beneficial in more ways than we imagined. It has enabled us to care for more animals, broadened our reach to surrounding islands, and brought us a growing number of visitors who want to tour our facility. Once the Education Area is complete, we'll be able to host groups of students from the area schools and get even more involved in educating the local community on animal health issues.
If any of you are going to be in southern Thailand, we invite you to visit our facility. I will personally show you around and treat you to a snack in our Kitty Cafe. Message me on our Website site, or on our Facebook page. Let me know when you'll be coming and I'll be in touch.
Thanks to all of you from the cats (and dogs), staff and volunteers here at Lanta Animal Welfare, on the amazing island of Koh Lanta, in southern Thailand.
