November Report for Lanta Animal Welfare's Project #29725

By Dr. Perley-Ann Friedman | Lanta Animal Welfare, Chief Financial Officer

RIP Theo, you were such a sweet gentle darling
RIP Theo, you were such a sweet gentle darling

Lanta Animal Welfare's Global Giving Project for a new cat compound has been underway now for almost three months. We began at the beginning of September as a new project with Global Giving with the requirement to have over 40 donors and $5,000 US total donations in the first few weeks.  Fortunately we met and exceeded this goal, both in number of donors and funds raised, to secure a permanent position as a Project within the Global Giving community.

We sincerely wish to thank our 63 donors who have generously helped us to date.  We are now calling the future cat compound a 'Kitty City' and maybe preface it with Koh Lanta, or a donor's name.  We are actively seeking foundations and large companies to help us raise the outstanding $35,000 US required to meet our Kitty City financial goals.  We are targeting May 1 as the beginning of a 6 month construction phase but of course this is dependent on being able to continue to raise money for this project in the coming months.

It is of critical importance to have Kitty City at Lanta Animal Welfare.  Now that this small island in south-western Thailand is approaching the high tourist season (December - April) our cat population is increasingly in jeopardy.

In October, Tiger, a young, sweet ginger cat was adopted and waiting out the quarantine period required for his entry into the UK.  Shortly before his departure, he was run over by a car in front of the centre.  He'd been roaming around on the street and didn't get out of the way when the vehicle was heading his way.

In November we suffered another tragedy, this time a dual fatality.  Theo and Whisky were two playful happy cats that wandered into the dog area one time too many.  Over the previous few weeks both cats had been found in the dog area and taken out.  We do our best to secure the cat and dog areas but some cats are very persistant and continually wander where they know we don't want them to go.  It is actually impossible to secure our dog area as it is very large and cats are excellent wall climbers.  Needless to say, both Theo and Whisky were killed when they did their last walk into the dog area.

It is so important for Lanta Animal Welfare to raise enough money to be able to begin construction on the Kitty City by the Spring.  We want to be able to both save the lives of rescued feline population on Koh Lanta as well as provide a safe haven for the cats as they seek to be adopted and wait out their quarantine period before flying off to their forever homes.

We ask that you consider helping us towards our Kitty City financial goals, even if you have been generious in the past.  Having a safe Kitty City environment will make such a difference in saving the lives of the abused cats on Koh Lanta and enabling to survive while we find them their forever homes.

Thank you so much for your help!
