Congo is one of the poorest countries in the world and has always had to face difficult challenges: civil wars, dictatorial regimes, malnutrition and the latest Ebola emergency have folded the population. People are tired, but they cannot surrender to a new enemy. Covid 19 has also arrived in this country and if it is not stopped it will face a new massacre. The government has ordered the closure of schools, has limited travel and banned gathering, is distributing disposable masks and is providing information on what is happening and on good health standards to keep.
Fortunately now all the girls of Casa Laura and the children followed by the Balou Center are well and follow the sanitary measures necessary to prevent the contagion.
But beside this sanitary emergency a new emergency is increasing: poverty and hunger! The lockdown has led to a sharp rise in the prices of necessities. The population is on its last legs: many have lost their jobs and no longer have the means to survive. Poverty leads to exasperation a population that for years has not known peace and many parents are ready to do anything to give a piece of bread to their children. The fear of looting is strong for both centers and has made necessary the renovation of the door of the entrance of Maison Laura: we cannot afford to risk intrusions and violence at this time of extreme uncertainty.
We certainly cannot close our eyes to so much suffering: together with our local referents, we are in fact supporting the most needy families by distributing, in addition to what we normally provide, milk powder for the babies and basic necessities.
Now more than ever we need YOUR help!
Thank you.
