So many exciting initiatives are developing at Six Seconds this year! We are expanding our impact in the community spaces and are focused on increasing our storytelling to share more moments of transformation with you as we work to increase the world’s emotional intelligence.
In December our project “Climate of Emotions” centering youth/climate/emotions was featured in a session at the COP28 SDG7 Global South Pavilion, hosted by Sustainable Energy for All (SEforALL) and the Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet (GEAPP).
The session opened with our friend and ally Wanjira Mathai, the Managing Director for Africa and Global Partnerships at WRI, Africa Advisor for Bezos Earth Fund, and daughter of the first African woman and first environmental activist to win the Nobel Peace Prize. In her words:
“Emotions are a form of renewable energy that can power people to change self and our world. To create a healthy global climate, we’ll need new approaches – and if we can deeply connect at an emotional level, we get the energy we need. Starting at the micro-level of connecting heart to heart, we can catalyze the changes we need at a macro level.”
The Climate of Emotions session got people engaged with a data visualization activity. Participants used colored strings to connect statements about climate, and how that affects people emotionally. From there, the SEforALL SDG7 Global Youth Ambassadors engaged participants in a moment of transparency: Sharing personal stories of their own emotions while engaging in climate work. Participants from across government, NGOs, energy, private sector, etc. shared that they’d never commented they’d never experienced this level of authenticity, and they left feeling something essential: We are allies in the climate crisis.

What is incredible about this initiative is how emotional intelligence is not a separate program or an afterthought, we know that when we embed emotions into programs, we are able to help partners enhance their mission. We want to expand our partnership programs to build capacity in all kinds of spaces far beyond the classroom and corporate offices that have been our limits. We want to bring emotional intelligence to everyone.
This year we plan to have more Climate of Emotions sessions and culminate in a large gathering in NYC to support and train youth leaders with capacity building skills of emotional intelligence. Their work in the field, their impact will be multiplied when they can access the power of emotions.
Thank you so much for your donation and continued support.
Warmly,
Patty
