YOUR SUPPORT IS MAKING OUR PROJECTS HAPPEN!

Muroki CRPH Training - Learning in the large group

VARIOUS DONORS JOINING HANDS
KAP currently runs many different activities: From the training of voluntary Community Resource Persons (CRPs) to the production of re-usable sanitary pads, community-based treatment of (young!) people suffering from addiction to alcohol and drugs, psycho-education sessions on HIV/AIDS, addiction, violence and trauma and issues affecting youths, education on request, etc.

In our experience, many donors are not fond of funding personnel costs, administrative- and other overheads but prefer the direct support given to people in need.
Whereas helping people surely also remains the focus of KAP's work, someone - some people - need to actually do the work and facilitate the required support.
As a community education and counselling programme addressing mental health issues, KAP's work is labour-intensive. And for very essential reasons administrative costs must also be made for our programme wheel to turn.
KAP has a very lean - and very committed - staff and its salaries are moderate indeed.
Despite these facts it has only been able to pay its team of workers' salaries and office expenses by sharing these costs over different donors and well-wishers. Fortunately this matched our GlobalGiving budget.
Thus your contributions have been essential for the implementation of our work - for which OUR MOST SINCERE THANKS!

In the past four months your GlobalGiving donations have contributed to the training of voluntary HIV/AIDS Community Resource Persons (CRPs) in the Muroki area, and trainings' follow-up activities in the Birunda- and Bikeke Unreached Girls CRPs groups.

MUROKI TRAINING OF HIV/AIDS COMMUNITY RESOURCE PERSONS (CRP-Hs) -
Muroki is a rural area on the slopes of Mt. Elgon, part of wider Saboti.
From the 22nd through the 24th November 2023 we had mobilised for a three-days HIV/AIDS WORKSHOP FOR LEADERS in order to mainstream the topic in their daily activities. There were 42 participants: 24 male and 18 female of whom 14 were youths.
After this first training these leaders selected from amongst their organizations participants to be trained as Community Resource Persons in matters HIV/AIDS and related infections ('CRP-Hs').
Their training started with a 6 non-residential days CORE-WORKSHOP FOR CRP-Hs from the 11th through the 16th December 2023. There were 47 participants: 23 male + 24 female. Two-thirds of them were youths, reflecting Kenya's demography.
Five participants (trainees) were deaf - with two capable sign language interpreters, resulting into eye-opening sharing of life-experiences.

Whereas HIV/AIDS is now generally considered a 'disease like any other' with high levels of awareness of its basic facts, once again the above trainings showed that the reality paints quite an opposite picture.
Particiants showed great interest and willingness to connect their new knowledge and attitudes to their daily life practices, whilst improving the same.
For all our deaf friends this was their first learning of both general and deeper facts.

The participants have now embarked on their follow-up activities of group-counselling ('Micro-Meetings'), One-on-One counselling sessions, Micro-Teachings (learning how to share their new knowledge and skills with others), Guided Education Sessions, Community Psycho-Education Sessions etc., which will culminate in their graduation after 9 months.

BIRUNDA GIRLS CRP-U (UNREACHED YOUTHS) TRAINING - FOLLOW UP ACTIVITIES -
This Unreached Youths training (Girls-Only due to donor requirements) had reached its stage of 'passing on their new message' to others through a series of KAP-Guided Education Sessions.
Whereas the public - often school youths - greatly appreciate learning about HIV/AIDS (there is a huge need!), these sessions also do much to boost the self-esteem of our trainees - thus becoming part of their own healing process as well.
The session shown in the photograph took place on the 17th January 2024 at Makindu Primary School for 58 pupils (33 male + 25 female) and 1 teacher.

BIKEKE GIRLS CRP-Us - GRADUATION CEREMONY - (see photograph) -
After 9 months of intensive training sessions this Unreached Youths training in the semi-rural and highly populated area of Bikeke were ready for their Graduation and its ceremony. This took place on the 6th January 2024 with 44 Girls CRP-U's graduating.
38 of them (!) had faithfully attended all of KAP's learning activities.
This is extra remarkable, because KAP does not pay transport refunds or 'sitting allowances' and all venues are donated free of charge by the participating community organisations.
After graduation, our new CRPs can choose to continue in an advanced training for another year. As many said to be keen, KAP is planing to do so.
