Preschool of Future for rural poor kids in China

The 7th report

Since April 2013 till October 31, 2014 Shanghai United Foundation and Humana People to People together have strived to promote Globalgiving online donation “Preschool of Future for rural poor kids in China” project in different channels – organization website, QQ, Facebook, Emails and information spread among friends.

We’ve already finished the fundraising goal for 7618 USD. There have been 76 Donations from 54 Donors to this project. Thanks to all the donors for the support to this project! Now we are starting to prepare for money withdraw and project work plan.

During this period, in the project, for teacher training, we organized teacher monthly trainings and field visits to other kindergartens. Monthly training mainly focused on children’s safety, health and nutrition issues and teaching methods. The teachers met every month and discuss and exchange with each other. The teachers can learn from each other about the advantages and disadvantages and improve themselves. We organized internship activities for teachers; each teacher can work in a different preschool for one to two days to learn some new teaching skills and experiences.

The Project Leader (second from right) visit Malishu preschool and communicate with the teacher on the daily operation

Also, in this period, evaluation tools of preschool children, teachers and parents were developed. According to the development characteristics of children and the aspects of parents’ attention to their children in preschool we developed Posters for evaluation of performance of respective 3-4 year old and 5-6 year old preschool children. For example, some of the evaluation indicators are “she/he can simply draw with color pen” (3-4 year old children), “ she/he is able to use a spoon to eat her/his own meal”(3-4 year old children), “ she/he is able to use scissors cut along a line”(3-4 and 5-6 year old children) , “ she/he is able to orderly, clearly and coherently tell about one thing” (5-6 year old children), “ she/he is able to clarify and organize her/his own belongings”(5-6 year old children), “ she/he can write her/his name correctly”(5-6 year old children), etc. The preschool teachers will do daily record of the children’s performance and update the posters monthly. The Posters will be pasted in the classroom and it also can show the changes of the children to their parents.

In order to evaluate the preschool teachers, the result of the teacher trainings and he progress they made we developed a “Monthly teacher evaluation form”. The Project Leader (PL) will evaluate the teachers and fill in the form every month after she/he has visited each preschool and has done the M&E. Then the PL can discuss with the teachers about their progress and what they need improve and then the teachers need adjust their work according to the evaluation result. The foundation of the development of the preschool is the local community. And the parents are the foundation of the community. To improve and broaden channels of communication with the parents is one of our very important tasks. So we developed a “Monthly feedback form for parent” where the teachers will fill in what preschool has done on cultivating the children and what progress the children have made. The form will be handed in to the parents during each parents meeting and the teacher will discuss problems and solutions together with the parents.

Happy Chinese New year to all dear donors and people who ever care about this project.
