Literacy and math impact in Chiriqui Province

HOLA AMIGOS! Thank you for your donations! Due to your generous contributions, Enseña por Panamá has been able to keep growing, reach more students and prepare better teachers. Fifteen out of thirty teachers are located in Chiriquí province, the second most important province after the capital. Chiriquí is known as an agricultural province, composed by many different ethnic groups. Among them, the Ngäbe Bugle and Emberá tribes; both have extremely low social indicators.

Frederick Espinosa holds a degree in Environmental Engineering and is currently in his second year of the program, working as a mathematics teacher at the Guarumal Telebásica School in the province of Chiriquí. He has been constantly concerned with giving differentiated support to students who require it in basic aspects of reading, writing and basic operations in mathematics. One day, in a conversation we had with other program teachers about their development as educators, Frederick told us about Joseph, a student who had previously attended a technical school where they only taught technology classes and who also had responsibilities at home because his mother suffered from a disease. Consequently, Joseph until a year ago seemed like a withdrawn student with little participation in the classroom and at school. Everything changed when it was Frederick's turn to coordinate a civic act within his school and it occurred to him to assign Joseph the role of Master of Ceremony, who with the help of Frederick, had greatly improved is reading and writing schools. " After one of the civic events Joseph approached Frederick and told him that nobody had ever trusted him, and that although he missed the computers of his old school, he preferred to receive the applause of the public for his impeccable reading skills.

Thanks to your donation, teachers like Frederick allow students like Joseph to feel safe in school, excited about learning and in a learning environment that empowers life skills.
