It's getting to the end of a great year!

Dear DAKTARI supporters,

Is it really November already? The end of 2014 is almost here and we are so glad and grateful for your continued precious support. I really hope you will still be involved with us for all of the great projects planned for 2015!! :) But today, let's talk about the latest news of the children at DAKTARI; because I guess that this is what you want to know about!

We have welcomed many international volunteers these last few months to teach the children and take care of the animals. Thus, the local underprivileged students were so happy to receive personal attention in their education. Indeed, our goal is to provide them with a one-to-one teaching experience to increase our impact on them and develop their self-confidence. "It is easier to participate in the classroom at DAKTARI because we are only 8 and the volunteers take the time to listen to us" (Precious, 13). The teachers also came to DAKTARI to express their opinion about our impact on their schoolchildren. During the first 3 weeks of November the students were in exams and then on school holidays for a while. During this time, the volunteers went to a neighboring village, the Oaks, to help the community by cleaning all the rubbish and teaching the residents and the children, about the importance of keeping their environment clean. To date, our project has raised an impressive $35,337 out of our $40,000 target. So far, with this money, we have educated 265 children about the importance of their environment through our Wildlife Orphanage. The objective is to fund this project by the end of the year, finding the remaining $4,663, and be able to support 35 more students in our program. I am sure that, together, we can take advantage of the GIVING SEASON and do this! Let's take up the challenge for the children! :)

Did you watch us on a Dutch TV?

Dear DAKTARI supporters,

As always, I am very exciting to let you know about the latest news developments from the camp. It is a big pleasure to share with you, extraordinary supporters, all our pulsating adventures.

The cold nights of winter are almost behind us now and everybody is welcoming the sunny and hot days with joy. The lessons are still running well. In the same time, the volunteers have even been organising some games with the kids all around the camp. A race between the "Leopards" Team and the "Lions" Team. Both kids and volunteers had a very good time.

What can I tell you that you don't know yet?

DAKTARI received a TV Crew!

We were visited by NOS Jeugdjournaal, a Dutch TV crew, who came to do a short documentary about children's stories from all over the world. The children were under the spotlight for a day, with the chance to tell other children about their environmental experience at DAKTARI. This programme from the Dutch TV deals with common daily news made understandable for Dutch children. We are very proud to have accomodated them!

The children went on a Safari!

The 10 best kids of the last weeks at DAKTARI had the chance to go on a Game Drive at Tsakane Safari Camp, located in the Balule Nature Reserve. We are so grateful that Tsakane could sponsor them. The Head Ranger of Tsakane took them for a three-hour game drive where they were so excited to see lions, giraffes and elephants. He also gave them a short presentation on water ecology and conservation.

Building Project

Remember that, in the last report, I mentioned our Build4DAKTARI project. So far, the campaign has been going well and we've finished building the office extension and one of the ablution block. Volunteers also have helped with the building, painting the white walls with lots of colours, flowers and animals! The result is impressive!

Animals News

Release of a spotted owl

DAKTARI received a call that a spotted owl was found, stuck in the fence. We were afraid that he would not be able to fly again so we took him to the vet. After taking care of him and nursing him back to full health, we released him! It was such a joy to see him fly again!!

Welcome of a new meerkat

Moholoholo Rehabilitation Center found a meerkat completly abandoned. Knowing that Meerkats are not from this area and that they need to live in group, they took him and gave him to DAKTARI. This sassy female met our 2 guys Gaspar and Tikki and the introduction seems to be going very well...

Around 150 children educated at DAKTARI since 2014

Before I get started on the latest news from camp, we are exited to let you know about the next Microsoft YouthSpark Bonus Day! WHAT NEWS IN THE CAMP?

150 children since the beginning of 2014

We are very proud to have had the opportunity to inspire, motivate and educate 150 underprivileged children since the beginning of the year, to care for their environment through the medium of a wildlife orphanage. Indeed, since January, DAKTARI welcomed all the grade 8 of the children from Lepono and Maahlamele School. You can read the promises of one of the children, Dineo, here. It is a good example of what kids can learn during their 5 days at DAKTARI. Note that the next school wich is waiting for us is Nareng. We can't wait to meet all of these new lovely children.

We did a survey for the children's parents, and here are a summury of the results:

- 99% of the parents have seen a difference in their child's behavior since his/her time at DAKTARI.- 87% of the parents think that their child's respect toward other people since his/her time at DAKTARI has improved.- 78% think that this stay at DAKTARI is beneficial for their kids
- For the parents, the 3 most important things are: 1. Interaction with animals (39%) / 2. Working with international volunteers (31%) / 3. One to one teaching (25%)

Game Drive at TSHUKUDU!

The 25th of May was a really excited day for the 10 kids who had improved the most during their time at DAKTARI. Indeed, we went on a Game Drive at Tshukudu Game Lodge with the children of Lepono and Maahlamele School. For most of the kids, although they live in a bush village, they never see any wild animals. This game drive is a chance for them to realize what they learnt at DAKTARI. Click here to read the entire article and see our game drive video.

We've had babies!

We have had lot of babies these last weeks such as baby porcupines, marmosets, tortoise, python and kitten. The porcupines and the marmosets were born at DAKTARI, for the others we found them lonely in the wild and we are going to organize their release in the next few months. For the kitten, we found a lovely family in town who were very happy to receive him. Kids are always very happy to see newborns, so are we! We have had lots of arrivals in the long-term volunteers. DAKTARI welcome a new office team, ready to take over the job! Check out here our article about the new team and their position.

Build4DAKTARI Campaign!

DAKTARI is developing, welcoming more and more volunteers to increase our work, so we now need to extend our facilities. The purpose of our latest campaign is to build three cement platforms to house the volunteers, two ablutions block for the children, volunteers and local staff, as well as an office extension to allow us to continue our impact on the community.
