For some, winning is the principal point of football. At the Manyatta Youth Resource Centre (MYRC), team building, cooperation, healthy activity, and peace building are central. As it happens, this approach also often leads to winning teams and player advancement.
Starting with girls and boys as young as 6, over the 14 years since the MYRC was founded, we have built teams that have placed in and won national competitions such as the Chapa Dimba na Safaricom. We have sent a number of our players on to the Kenya National Team, and others to careers with Kenya Premier League teams such as Tusker, Black Stars and Gor Mahia, as well as teams in Europe. In the process, hundreds of young people have learned how to peacefully interact with their peers, and have fun participating in a healthy pursuit.
Coordinating with other like-minded groups allows the MYRC to learn from others and talk about our experiences. Recently, our leadership team attended a gathering in Nakuru to share information and insights. It was exhilarating to network with a broad spectrum of leaders working with goals similar to our own.
Of course, our young people often need basic clothes and equipment to play their best. Generous donations allow our kids to practice and play in suitable footwear and gear.
The MYRC continues to offer a wide variety of programs and activities. Our weekly lunch ensures a regular healthy meal. Mentors guide those interested in performing and visual arts, computers, and help with school. And football consistently brings in children who will go on to build all kinds of skills – athletic, artistic, and social.
We are grateful for your support over the years and ask for your continued generosity so Equip Manyatta can continue to provide the basic funding that allows the MYRC and its participants to grow and thrive.
