Introduction
Lanta Animal Welfare is very thankful for your support, as it allows us to continue our good work here on Koh Lanta. In this report I’m going to tell you about our amazing head vet, and about Ernie a rescue pup.
It’s low season now, here on Koh Lanta, so the island is very quiet and many businesses close down for a few months. We always like to be positive at Lanta Animal Welfare, so we call this the green season, as the island is lush with greenery from the short daily rains.
Dr. Helen Guy and Lanta Pet Friends
During green season the Lanta Animal Welfare is busy, same as always, rescuing animals in peril and holding mobile sterilization clinics in the region. At the helm is our head vet, Dr. Helen Guy, from England. She’s been with Lanta Animal Welfare for about 10 years now, having stumbled upon us during a vacation and feel in love with our mission.
Dr. Helen returned to Lanta Animal Welfare as a visiting vet, and now, a decade later, she’s our head vet. She is responsible for the clinic’s massive growth, our internationally recognized mobile sterilization clinics, and our status as a teaching hospital for the internship of vet graduates. And now Dr. Helen is responsible for something that has been such a positive influence on the local community.
Dr. Helen opened Lanta Pet Friends, a private vet clinic here on Koh Lanta, where locals can bring their pets for medical care. This has freed up the clinic at Lanta Animal Welfare providing them with more time and resources to expand our rescue animal footprint in the area, and hold more mobile clinics.
Locals used to bring their pets to Lanta Animal Welfare as it was the only animal clinic on the island. It was often a burden to the clinic staff, but they could not refuse to help an animal in need. Now the locals can get excellent medical care from Dr. Helen’s excellent vets, many who she trained as interns.
Dr. Helen oversees the clinic, in addition to her work at Lanta Animal Welfare. As a local with a couple of cats, I am so grateful that I can get great medical care without interfering with the animal rescue activities at Lanta Animal Welfare.
Dr. Helen is a wonderful part of Lanta Animal Welfare. We are very happy that the establishment of Lanta Pet Friends means that Dr. Helen will be staying long-term on Koh Lanta and at Lanta Animal Welfare.
Ernie - A Feel Good Story
Ernie was not looking good when Lanta Animal Welfare rescued him. He had been hit by a car, and his leg was badly broken. He couldn’t walk and our examination revealed a pelvic fracture. This pup was helpless, and so tiny.
Our medical team wanted to remove his broken leg but feared he would die during surgery as he was so frail. They set his leg and provided him with constant attention and medical care.
Ernie is now on the road to recovery. I hope you enjoy the short video showing him 6-weeks after his rescue

I hope you enjoyed this report and the stories about Dr. Helen and Ernie.
Please let me know any stories you’d like to see in our future reports, and any other comments/questions you may have. I’d love to hear from you.
Wishing you all a good summer, until next time…
