African emotions

By Ilaria Ventura | project leader

You can see Africa on television, you can see it on the web, but you certainly can’t taste the perfume, the warmth, the breeze that enters your body and accompanies you throughout your stay. This is well known to the boys who last January accompanied the contact Sara on her trip to monitor the project in Embu.
Here’s the exciting story of the trip:

"The arrival in Africa is full of emotion, we breathe immediately the hot air and the thousand colors that surround us leave us amazed, as if we had never seen the colors of the world: the blue of the sky arrives in our eyes, gives us the frame of a painted picture, full of bright shades, of earth and love.
The emotion when we meet our contact person is great! Bernard smiles as he gets on the bus to accompany us to the children, is happy to see us and immediately we are surrounded by a family warmth.
From Embu city we head to Nginda, on Mount Kenya: that’s where all our children are waiting for us. The joy grows when we discover that the school we saw under construction last year is over and is ready to welcome many of our children.
It’s wonderful to be able to participate in the growth of a child, to observe the distance progress makes us speechless. Little children who we greeted last year come to meet us walking and taking our hand, others older greet us glad to see us again!
We find Doreen, a sweet little lady, very curious about us and everything we have and carry. His little hand asks and takes us to carry us around, to be held, to take a dance round and to smile. She is not shy, she seems to know well what she wants and with whom she wants to play. She walks among us, while we continue to look at her and smile at her.
And then we still know Ryan in the arms of his mother and immediately we realize the precarious conditions in which they live: the body of the mother is skinny and very thin; she is very young and is suffering from HIV. There’s no news of Ryan’s dad, and mom can’t take care of the baby on her own. together with contact Bernard we decide to include Ryan in the support program, with the hope of being able to help them all together!
The emotions we feel are many and very strong: sometimes it comes from smiling, sometimes it comes from crying, sometimes we take refuge in the mental space to protect ourselves from all this great love that is so pure that it can hurt. And then the only thing we have left to do is to help as much as possible, help each one differently as it feels. Only in this way can we make our difference, only in this way can we participate in this world, with the hand in the hand of the other, aware of the beauty of life".

If Sara’s words give us hope, the difficult moment that the whole world is experiencing is a cause for concern. Covid-19 has not yet taken hold in Kenya and our referent has assured us that all children and families of the project are well. Bernard also told us that to date the camps have not been invaded by locusts which are causing serious damage in many African countries.

We hope to update you with good news!
