Project Report | Mar 22, 2021
Back to school for Nginda children

By Francesca Pellegatta | Junior Project Leader

Kenya is facing this pandemic trying to strengthen medical services and to reduce the spread of the virus. Currently the confirmed cases are about 113.000 with 1918 deaths (data from World Health Organization). Last November the Secretary of Cabinet for Education, professor Magoha, announced that pre-primary, primary and secondary schools would have been reopened in January and this has fortunately happened.

Since January 4th 2021 basic learning institutions are reopening with classes in presence. All school-age children that have the possibility to attend school are experiencing this comeback to the desks. This is a really reassuring news because in Kenya – like in many other countries - school is not just a place in which children and teenager can learn, socialize, build and improve their future. For many Kenyan children school represents a place in which they are protected from all the dangers they could run into in slums and in many villages.

In our last report we described the significant rise in pregnancies registered during the period in which the schools were closed, but not just sexual violence scares us: young boys and girls in the streets can be manipulated or forced to become protagonists of recruitments, raids and other kinds of violence. That’s why school is so important to them!

Our goal is to get the children off the streets or from a life of abandonment and extreme poverty. Through the project “Case Famiglia Nginda” many families keep welcoming with open arms orphan or abandoned children and also young girls and boys that come from the poorest families of Nginda.

Thanks to your support we are able to help these families, preparing them in order to provide adequate care to some of the most vulnerable children of the region, which often come from really delicate situations. With your support we want to give back to these children the right to a dignified life, allowing them to attend school and to hope for a better future!
