Not Just A Meal

By Abigael Gathoni | Communication Assistant.

Hunger, food insecurity and malnourishment remain daily realities for many families living in Kibera. For countless children, the struggle to find their next meal takes priority over education, health, and the opportunity to dream about the future. Poverty forces impossible choices on parents; skipping meals so the children can eat, children leaving school to help provide for their families, and many infants begin life already at a disadvantage due to poor nutrition.

‘I have served more meals than I can recall, but what I always remember is the faces. Relief, joy, happiness and gratitude are all clearly shown on every child that I have served a meal to. I have lived in Kibera my whole life, and I completely understand the situation they are coming from and why these two simple meals mean a lot to each one of them. Children have come back to me after finishing their studies and have always attested that these simple meals are what kept them in school,’ our head chef states.

Our feeding program has enabled many of our students to focus on school and be eager to come to school and learn because they know that there will be a hot drink and snack; plus, a nutritious, balanced lunch ready for them at lunchtime. Keeping kids in school is more than just sitting in a class and learning, it is about feeding the mind, body and soul, a holistic approach.

We have watched children come and go; the joy that a simple meal brings to their faces is something to cherish for a lifetime. We can make this more than a dream for even more kids in Kibera, through your help with donations. This is not just a meal; this is a future we are making.
