Brian (pictured left) had a good start in life. He was the second-born in a home where his dad had a relatively good job as a labourer, and his mum was able to get some work washing clothes.
Unfortunately, when he was four his dad lost his job, and his fruitless search, day after day, for alternative employment led him to drink and he became an alcoholic. By this time Brian had a younger sister, and what little money his mum was still able to make was drunk by his dad.
After a desperate and miserable 18 months, eventually his dad deserted the family, leaving his mum alone to care for the three children. She still cannot get regular paid employment, and continues to make a little from her clothes washing, but it's hard to get enough to feed and clothe her family, and pay the rent at the start of each month.
The fact that Brian receives two good, nutritious meals each school day is really having an impact on his health, and means he can concentrate well in class. It is also helping the family, as his is one less mouth for his mum to feed.
