Hunger Keeps Rural Children Out of School

By Joy Ojochogwu Etubi | Project Leader

Dear Donors,

We sincerely thank the donors who have already supported the Feed 1,000 Nigerian Schoolchildren Every Month project. Your generosity reflects care for children who struggle daily with hunger. However, the donations received so far will not be enough to kick-start the project. We are seeking additional support to begin providing meals to these pupils.

In many rural communities, children go to school without eating breakfast. Some remain hungry throughout the school day, while others stay home because there is no food available. Hunger affects concentration, participation, and academic performance. For families facing hardship, feeding children daily is a serious challenge.

This project will establish school kitchens to prepare and serve cooked meals to 1,000 children every school day. Meals will be prepared by local women using fresh ingredients sourced from nearby farmers and markets. Each child will receive a nutritious meal during the school day, helping them stay attentive and engaged in class.

Providing reliable meals can encourage regular school attendance and reduce dropouts linked to food shortages. When children know they will eat at school, families are more likely to send them consistently. In addition, engaging local cooks and purchasing food from local suppliers will support small-scale economic activity within the community.

Although we are grateful for the initial donations, more funding is required before meal preparation and distribution can begin. We kindly invite more donors to support this effort so that children can attend school without the burden of hunger.

Sincerely,

Joy Ojochogwu Etubi
