Creating Transformative Change for Women and Children in Kampala's Slums

By Atim Racheal | Fundraiser

Dear Valued Donor,

Thank you for your continued support of Joy for Children Uganda. We are pleased to share an update on our work to support women living in Kampala’s slums. Your generosity is helping us bring lasting change to communities facing some of the most difficult challenges in urban Uganda.

Women living in Kampala’s slums face multiple barriers that prevent them from living safe, healthy, and fulfilling lives. These include poverty, limited access to education, poor healthcare, and social isolation. JFCU’s programs respond to these realities by helping women build better futures for themselves and their families.

JFCU supports young mothers and girls at risk of dropping out of school through mentorship and advocacy. We work closely with families, schools, and local leaders to ensure that girls can stay in school or return after pregnancy. By creating a more supportive environment, we help girls continue their education and build the foundation for a stronger future.

Our vocational training programs equip women with practical skills they can use to earn an income. Women are trained in areas such as tailoring, hairdressing, and craft-making. These skills open up new opportunities for economic independence and give women the confidence to provide for themselves and their children.

Access to healthcare in slum areas remains limited. To address this, JFCU runs mobile health clinics in partnership with local health providers. These clinics bring essential services including maternal care, reproductive health education, and child immunizations directly into the communities where they are needed most.

We have also trained a network of Community Health Volunteers who live and work within the slums. These volunteers help educate others about key health topics such as family planning, sanitation, and disease prevention. They act as trusted local resources and a bridge to health services.

Workshops on menstrual health and hygiene empower women and girls to manage their health with confidence and dignity. Hygiene kits are provided to those in need as part of these outreach efforts.

As we move forward, our goal is to reach more women with life-changing services and support. We are committed to deepening our programs in education, health, and skills development while continuing to strengthen our partnerships within the community.

Your support makes this work possible. It brings hope, dignity, and real opportunities to women who are too often left behind. Thank you for walking alongside them and standing with us.
