A Fulfilled Holiday Dream

By Eric Gaka | Fundraising & Communications Manager

Every long school holiday in November and December brings excitement and a holidaying mood to school going children in Kenya after a long academic year in school, with many having plans of how they are going to spend their time.

This is sometimes not the case to most children in Kibera who depend on The Turning Point’s school feeding programme for breakfast and lunch during the school days.

Michael, a 8-year-old boy in grade 3 at the Fountains of Hope School, lives with his mother, grandmother, and small brother. When schools break for the long holidays in November and December, hopes of him getting at least 2 meals a day start to dim. He is not guaranteed that his mother, who is a casual laborer in the slum, will be able to provide food for him and the rest of the family during the holiday.

Through your support, hopes of children like Michael were rekindled back, for they had a guarantee of having at least 2 meals during the long holiday. Provision of food items such as maize flour, rice, beans, soap, sugar, and cooking oil ensured that the children and their families had a decent meal, and that no child engaged themselves in child labour or crime to find food while they were at home. This gave them an opportunity to enjoy their holidays like other children.

All our children came back to school this month looking healthy and feeling relaxed, thanks to the holiday feeding programme which ensured that there was no nutritional loss among the children, and that they had ample time to unwind and catch up with their friends during the holidays.

As an organization, we would not have achieved all this without your generous support. We thank you for accepting to partner with us in ensuring that we extend our school feeding programme  to the households of the children we support and their families. Thank you for being part of our mission of restoring hope to the 150 families that The Turning Point supports,, and walking beside them in their journey of achieving their full God given potential.
