Introduction
At Sheepcare Community Centre, we remain steadfast in our mission to empower vulnerable children through education, nutrition, and community support. The “Feed a Child to Stay in School” project continues to be a vital initiative that addresses one of the greatest barriers to learning in our community—hunger.
Project Goals
- Provide daily nutritious meals to underprivileged children attending school.
- Increase school attendance and concentration through food security.
- Support families struggling with food shortages to keep their children in school.
Activities and Achievements
- Meals Were Served Daily: We served over 100meals to children in our primary and secondary school programs since the term began in April 28th.
- Improved Attendance: We observed a 85% increase in regular school attendance since the feeding program's implementation.
- Increased Community Involvement: Local volunteers and parents contributed dry foods that that supported the feeding program for the first three weeks of the term, showing growing ownership of the program;
- Improvement of Children’s Health : Teachers have reported noticeable improvements in children's energy levels, class participation, and alertness.
Impact Story
Antony, a 12-year-old boy from Soweto Slums; Nairobi, used to miss school regularly because his family couldn’t afford to feed him breakfast or lunch. Since he joined our school feeding program, Antony not only attends school daily but has also improved his grades significantly. His dream is to become an engineer and give back to his community.
Challenges Faced
- Rising Food Prices: Inflation has made it more expensive to purchase staple foods like maize, rice, Sugar and cooking oil.
- Resource Constraints: We continue to rely heavily on donor support and struggle to maintain consistent food supplies during lean months.
Looking Forward
We plan to:
-Expand the feeding program to reach more children, especially those who are not students at our school.
-Introduce a regular and sustainable feeding program to the widows and underprivileged in the community some of them being the parents of the children at our school, we plan to do this through economic empowerment so that they are able to get their own food and needs rather than giving the food items
-Explore partnerships with local farms and suppliers to secure sustainable food sources.
-Organize nutrition education programs to promote healthy habits.
Gratitude
We are deeply grateful to our Donors on GlobalGiving. Your generosity is directly feeding children, helping them stay in school, and offering hope for a brighter future. Every meal served is a step closer to breaking the cycle of poverty through education.
With heartfelt thanks,
