This is the story of a 12 years young girl named Aarti . She lives with her family in the red light area in Forbesganj, Bihar. Her mother was a survivor of prostitution and now run a small tea shop outside her home and his father runs a cart puller. Aarti studied in a school run by Apne Aap starting when she was 4 and there she was provided with lunch, books and study materials. Due to the Covid pandemic, she stopped coming to school when she was 8 and she lost access to all the facilities that were available to her. During the pandemic, her father and mother lost their jobs and they reached the brink of starvation. Aarti messaged Apne Aap asking for food for her family and neighbors.
In the mean time, Apne Aap planned to give food to these poor and helpless people during the pandemic and started a food distribution program called “ 1 Million Meals”. The goal of this program was to distribute 1 million meals, but this program has been going on continuously since 25 March 2020 and we have increased our target many times having now distributed 17.4 million meals. With the help of this program, many poor and helpless families received meals and the girls and women of their families were saved from being trafficked and the clutches of traffickers.
Along with Aarti, we also arranged for many girls from the community to learn Karate and Dance in our community center twice a week. The girls enjoy learning Karate and Dance. By learning Karate
and Dance, their self-confidence increases and they develop their self-respect. They soon become fearless. Now Aarti is a brave and bold girl, getting her friends to come and learn in the Apne Aap Center. In the same way, we saved Aarti from the clutches of the sex traffickers, we got her in a Local Public School in 2024 and right now she is studying in 6th grade. Since the start of this program on 25 March 2020, till now we have connected 1048 girls to education by successfully getting them admitted to schools and through our “1 Million Meal” program, we have distributed ration kits among 16644 families in 7 states in India and also helped 29 other NGO.
