In Karamoja, many mothers face the painful challenge of caring for their children while struggling to obtain enough food for their households. Prolonged drought, failed harvests, and rising food costs are putting additional pressure on families already living with limited resources. For pregnant and breastfeeding women, inadequate access to nutritious food can increase health risks and make an already difficult situation even more challenging.
When household food supplies diminish, mothers often bear the responsibility of stretching what remains among their children and other family members. Yet caregivers also need adequate nutrition to maintain their own health and support their families.
The worsening food insecurity in Karamoja makes it essential to strengthen assistance for vulnerable households. The September 2026 IPC assessment estimated that approximately 673,000 people in the region were facing IPC Phase 3 or higher food insecurity.
The Girl Child Foundation Uganda (GIFU) is calling on donors, humanitarian organizations, businesses, and development partners to help raise awareness of the challenges confronting families affected by hunger.
Through GlobalGiving, supporters can help mobilize resources for appropriate food assistance and nutrition initiatives aimed at protecting vulnerable people.
Mothers should not have to choose between their own well-being and feeding their children. Join GIFU in calling for a stronger response to hunger and help bring hope to families across Karamoja.
