In Karamoja, prolonged drought is creating interconnected challenges that threaten food security, household well-being, and rural livelihoods. When rainfall becomes insufficient, crops struggle to mature, livestock face reduced access to pasture and water, and families find it increasingly difficult to maintain their livelihoods.
For vulnerable households, water scarcity can deepen an already difficult hunger situation. Families need reliable water supplies not only for drinking and domestic use but also to support agriculture, livestock, and other essential activities. When these resources become scarce, recovering from drought becomes even more challenging.
The September 2026 IPC assessment estimated that 673,000 people in Karamoja were experiencing Crisis-level food insecurity or worse. These figures underscore the urgent need for sustained attention to communities affected by food shortages and climatic shocks.
The Girl Child Foundation Uganda (GIFU) is calling on donors, humanitarian organizations, businesses, and development partners to help strengthen support for vulnerable communities. Emergency food assistance remains essential, while sustainable water access and climate-resilient livelihoods can help reduce the impact of future droughts.
Through GlobalGiving, we invite compassionate supporters to help bring this crisis to a wider audience and encourage meaningful action.
Food brings nourishment, water sustains life, and solidarity gives communities hope. Join GIFU in advocating for a stronger response to Karamoja's hunger emergency and a more resilient future for its families.
