For families in Karamoja, the effects of prolonged drought can continue long after the rains fail. Poor harvests reduce household food supplies, declining agricultural income limits purchasing power, and pressure on livestock livelihoods makes recovery more difficult. When these challenges occur together, vulnerable households can become trapped in a cycle of hunger and hardship.
The September 2026 IPC assessment estimated that approximately 673,000 people in Karamoja were facing Crisis-level food insecurity or worse. This growing emergency highlights the importance of responding to immediate food shortages while helping communities prepare for future climatic shocks.
The Girl Child Foundation Uganda (GIFU) believes that protecting families requires a combination of timely humanitarian assistance and practical investments in resilience. Emergency food support can help households meet urgent needs, while drought-tolerant crops, climate-smart farming, reliable water sources, and appropriate livelihood support can help reduce vulnerability over time.
We are appealing to donors, businesses, foundations, and humanitarian partners to help raise awareness of Karamoja's needs and strengthen support for appropriate relief and recovery initiatives.
Every family deserves a fair opportunity to secure food, protect its children, and rebuild its livelihood after a difficult season.
Please stand with Karamoja. Your support can help bring this emergency to the attention of people who can make a difference and encourage action that addresses both today's hunger and tomorrow's challenges.
